Lochness monster – Working for a future

Lochness Monster è un gruppo alternative rock del sud della Florida. La band è composta da Bruce Donaldson (cantante), Justin Shaner (chitarra), Federico Carradini (basso) e Rene Rivera (batteria).

Justin Shaner ha formato i Lochness Monster nel 2015 e nel 2016 è stato pubblicato il loro album di debutto “Fables”. L’album è stato registrato dal produttore discografico d’oro James Paul Wisner che ha anche lavorato con band come Dashboard Confessional, Paramore e Underoath. L’album ha ricevuto la trasmissione radiofonica e ha raggiunto la posizione # 16 nelle classifiche CMJ (College Music Journal), rimanendo in classifica per diversi mesi.

Nel 2018 la band è rientrata in studio con Wisner per lavorare al loro EP omonimo e la band ha pubblicato un video musicale per “Calling Out” e “Farewell Past” dall’EP. “Farewell Past” è stata scelta come una delle migliori canzoni del 2021 nel Launch Pad Live Top 20 Countdown dopo essere arrivata numerose volte al primo posto del conto alla rovescia. Lochness Monster è stato premiato come Best Rock Band agli Oski Awards 2019 a Miami, FL ed è stato scelto per suonare in uno dei più grandi festival musicali della Florida, il SunFest, con One Republic e Keith Urban come headliner. Nel 2020 Lochness Monster aveva in programma di suonare al Rock in Roma, un festival rock internazionale, ma il festival è stato ritardato a causa della pandemia.

Dal 2019 al 2021 i Lochness Monster sono entrati di nuovo in studio per lavorare al loro secondo EP intitolato “Working for a Future” che include 3 nuove canzoni (Atlas, Glass Jar e Running Away) e una versione alternativa di uno dei loro preferiti dai fan, “Pendulum”, con Bruce Donaldson alla voce.

Il chitarrista, Justin Shaner, afferma che “le nostre nuove canzoni in questo secondo EP sono il risultato del nostro non rinunciare a scrivere canzoni a causa del Covid-19 e trovare modi creativi per continuare la nostra passione in un periodo in cui era difficile stare insieme. Abbiamo effettuato numerose sessioni di missaggio a distanza e, una volta che ci siamo potuti riunire di nuovo, abbiamo continuato a fare sessioni di missaggio di persona. Avevamo un nuovo sound di produzione che stavamo cercando che fosse più essenziale rispetto alle nostre versioni precedenti, quindi abbiamo deciso di produrre interamente queste nuove canzoni noi stessi presso Rain Cat Recordings a Stuart, FL e Bull Productions a Miami, FL. Anche se è stato un processo più lungo del solito, siamo stati in grado di ottenere questo nuovo materiale proprio come immaginavamo che suonasse, e questi studi hanno fatto davvero un ottimo lavoro nel catturare la musica in un modo crudo e autentico”.

“Ci siamo spinti di più durante il processo di scrittura delle canzoni in questa versione e ci siamo assicurati di provare ogni strada possibile fino a quando la canzone non suonava al meglio in un ambiente dal vivo. Non ci siamo posti alcun vincolo di tempo, volevamo solo pubblicare canzoni che ritenevamo fossero al meglio prima di entrare nella fase di studio e anche in studio non c’era molto da aggiungere strati extra alla canzone ma di più di un’enfasi sulla presentazione della canzone nella sua vera forma. L’atmosfera che ottengo da questa versione è che siamo autenticamente noi ma è difficile classificarli in un genere, e ogni canzone è come lo yin per gli altri yang”. – Justin Shaner, chitarrista/cantautore

Recensione dell’ep:

L’ep inizia con “Glass Jar” e subito veniamo conquistati da questa chitarra roboante, nervosa, ansiogena. La ritmica è tanto sostenuta e molto adatta per esaltare sia il cantato carismatico che ascoltiamo che il “lavoro della chitarra”. Il chorus attrae tanto il focus dell’ascoltatore: impossibile resistere a questo chorus….Ascoltando “Glass jar” mi viene da pensare a band come A Perfect Circle e Katatonia.

Arriva “Running away” con questo arpeggio tanto evocativo che serpeggia per gran parte della canzone. Qui pensiamo pure a qualcosa di Audioslave oltre le band su citate: quindi progressive rock che si mischia con alternative metal. Il basso sempre prorompente come nella canzone precedente. Una canzone dal songwriting lievemente intricato “Running away” con pause e ripartenze, con cambi di ritmo esaltanti: infatti come non notare il climax verso la fine del pezzo, da far trasalire l’ascoltatore….Inoltre, nelle parti più melodiche e luminose mi sembra di ascoltare un afflato pop rock alla Coldplay: infatti questa band riesce a mettere insieme una verve depressive rock ed una più luminosa, tanto luminosa. Si continua con “Atlas” con questi riff di chitarra tanto “imponenti” e la parola luminosa acquista tanto significato. E con “Atlas” si passa ad un alternative rock/indie rock davvero solare, una sorta di Ed Sheeran in salsa alternative rock/indie rock….Il chorus è davvero entusiasmante…Stupendo il bridge verso fine canzone…

L’ultima traccia si chiama “Pendulum” e troviamo altro arpeggio effettato. Poi un refrain di chitarra tanto attrattivo ci conquista. Pure qui pensiamo a delle cose di Audioslave, una sorta di ballad alternative rock tanto evocativa. Qui come altrove i climax sono prodigiosi e mi mandano alla mente anche un certo Eddie Vedder(Pearl Jam). I fraseggi di chitarra sono stupefacenti. Songwriting sempre tanto intricato e bella effettistica e produzione sonora, non c’è che dire…

Lochness Monster è una band davvero di alto livello, una band pronta per calcare grandi palchi e far emozionare immense folle. Una delle loro peculiarità è riuscire a trasmettere un’energia tanto luminosa quanto anche oscura e a tratti malinconica. “Pendulum” e “Atlas” le migliori del disco senza dubbio, sono la strada da seguire….

Lochness Monster is an Alternative Rock band from South Florida. The band consists of Bruce Donaldson (Singer), Justin Shaner (Guitar), Federico Carradini (Bass), and Rene Rivera (Drums).

Justin Shaner formed Lochness Monster in 2015 and in 2016 their debut album “Fables” was released. The album was recorded by gold record producer James Paul Wisner who also worked with bands, such as, Dashboard Confessional, Paramore, and Underoath. The album received radio play and it peaked at #16 on the CMJ (College Music Journal) charts, remaining on the charts for several months.

In 2018 the band re-entered the studio with Wisner to work on their self-titled EP and the band released a music video for “Calling Out” and “Farewell Past” off the EP. “Farewell Past” was chosen as one of the top songs of 2021 on the Launch Pad Live Top 20 Countdown after it came in 1st on the countdown numerous times. Lochness Monster was awarded Best Rock Band at the 2019 Oski Awards in Miami, FL and was chosen to play at one of Florida’s largest music festivals, SunFest, with One Republic and Keith Urban headlining. In 2020 Lochness Monster was planning to play Rock in Roma, an international rock festival, but the festival was delayed due to the pandemic.

From 2019 to 2021 Lochness Monster entered the studio again to work on their 2nd EP titled “Working for a Future” which will include 3 new songs (Atlas, Glass Jar, and Running Away) and an alternate version of one of their fan favorites, “Pendulum,” with Bruce Donaldson on vocals. Guitarist, Justin Shaner, states “our new songs on this 2nd EP are a result of us not giving up on songwriting through covid and finding creative ways to continue our passion through a time that was difficult to get together. We went through numerous remote mixing sessions, and once we could get together again, we continued to do in person mixing sessions. We had a new production sound we were going for that was more stripped down then our previous releases, so we decided to entirely produce these new songs ourselves at Rain Cat Recordings in Stuart, FL and Bull Productions in Miami, FL. Though it was a longer process than usual, we were able to get this new material right where we envisioned it to sound, and these studios really did a great job of capturing the music in a raw, authentic way.” “Working for a Future” was just released on February 3rd, 2022. Andy Van Dette at Engine Room Audio NYC has mastered all of their material to date.

Ep review:

The ep starts with “Glass Jar” and we are immediately conquered by this thunderous, nervous, anxious guitar. The rhythm is very sustained and very suitable for enhancing both the charismatic singing we listen to and the “work of the guitar”. The chorus attracts the listener’s focus so much: it is impossible to resist this chorus… Listening to “Glass jar” I think of bands like A Perfect Circle and Katatonia.

“Running away” arrives with this evocative arpeggio that winds through most of the song. Here we also think of something of Audioslave beyond the aforementioned bands: therefore progressive rock that mixes with alternative metal / alternative rock. The bass always bursting like in the previous song. A song with a slightly intricate songwriting “Running away” with pauses and restarts, with exciting rhythm changes: in fact, how not to notice the climax towards the end of the piece, to make the listener startled …. Furthermore, in the most melodic and luminous parts I it seems like listening to a Coldplay-style pop rock inspiration: in fact this band manages to put together a depressive rock verve and a brighter, very luminous one. We continue with “Atlas” with these very “impressive” guitar riffs and the luminous word acquires a lot of meaning. And with “Atlas” we move on to a really sunny alternative rock / indie rock, a sort of Ed Sheeran in alternative rock / indie rock sauce …. The chorus is really exciting … The bridge towards the end of the song is wonderful …

The last track is called “Pendulum” and we find another effected arpeggio. Then a very attractive guitar refrain conquers us. Here too we think of things from Audioslave, a sort of evocative alternative rock ballad. Here as elsewhere great the climaxes are prodigious and also remind me of a certain Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam). The guitar phrases are amazing. Songwriting always so intricate and beautiful effects and sound production, no doubt about it …

Lochness Monster is a really high level band, a band ready to tread big stages and thrill huge crowds. One of their peculiarities is being able to transmit an energy that is as bright as it is dark and at times melancholy. Pendulum and Atlas the best of the record without a doubt, they are the way to go….

Last notes to make: Lochness Monster brings together different musical genres creating an electrifying hybrid and their mastery in songwriting is disarming….
