Intervista a Synthia Looper

Come è nata in te la passione per la musica?

Ho sempre amato la musica fin da piccola. Mi ha sempre fornito un senso di fuga che nient’altro al mondo può offrire. Mia madre è anche una pianista e cantante di incredibile talento, quindi penso di aver ereditato naturalmente da lei l’amore per la musica. Nel mondo della musica sono sempre stata più attratta dal canto e dalla scrittura di canzoni. Durante la mia infanzia e la mia adolescenza ho scritto ed eseguito la mia musica ogni volta che ne ho avuto l’opportunità. Tuttavia, una volta che ho avuto la possibilità di registrare e produrre le mie canzoni, sono rimasta assolutamente affascinata dal mondo della musica indie. Dopo il liceo, ho incontrato il mio ragazzo (ora marito), che è un chitarrista, cantante, cantautore e produttore di grande talento. Abbiamo formato una band e ci siamo esibiti insieme per 10 anni, durante i quali ho anche sviluppato un amore per la fantascienza, il trucco, il cosplay e le graphic novel. Una volta che abbiamo deciso di creare una famiglia, ci siamo presi una breve pausa dalle esibizioni, ma durante questo periodo abbiamo deciso di creare un progetto che ci permettesse di esplorare tutte le nostre passioni. Così è nata Synthia Looper. Come accenno nella mia biografia, Synthia Looper è stata concettualizzata da un profondo amore per la musica, la fantascienza, il fantasy, il trucco, i graphic novel, il cosplay e la giustizia sociale. Ho creato il suo personaggio come mezzo per far fronte a tutte le turbolenze della società, specialmente negli ultimi anni, fornendomi allo stesso tempo uno sbocco sano e creativo. Nonostante tutto il caos politico e globale, sono grata per il recente cambiamento della cultura pop (che si è diffuso soprattutto nell’ultimo decennio circa) che ha reso popolare ciò che affettuosamente chiamo nerd-dom (es: film Marvel / DC, trucco per effetti speciali, cosplay, graphic novel, ecc.). Gli stessi elementi che rendono il nerdom vivo e vegeto oggi sono ciò che ha gettato le fondamenta della creatività per tutta la mia vita, quindi alla fine mi è sembrato il momento giusto per mostrare tutto il mio nerdom personale esplorando così tante altre sfaccettature che non erano così accessibili in passato per creare Synthia Looper.

Come nascono le tue canzoni? Che ambiente crei intorno a te?

Quando mi viene in mente una melodia o un testo è come se una visione cinematografica nella mia mente iniziasse a svolgersi. Rifletto prima sull’emozione provocata dalla melodia, poi considererò che tipo di visuale evoca questa sensazione, e da lì inizia a progredire, trasformandosi in una storia fantasy di qualche tipo, come una sequenza d’azione o uno spettacolo teatrale che si svolge in un regno fantascientifico, cyberpunk o stravagante. Poi, ciascuna di queste fantasie diventa il proprio mondo, e io costruisco su di esso (cioè la canzone progredisce). Mi piace pensare a questo processo come a un termine usato da molti creativi chiamato “costruzione del mondo”. Vorrei anche menzionare che Synthia è una Synthapien (o homosapien sintetico che è in parte umano, alieno e androide) e ho sviluppato il suo personaggio per avere la capacità di “girare” attraverso lo spazio e il tempo, quindi è in grado di diventare una nuova versione di se stessa basata sul mondo attuale in cui risiede. Quindi, man mano che una canzone avanza, anche il suo personaggio lo fa, e questo si riflette fortemente nella sua estetica. Da qui i vari costumi. Adoro assolutamente rendere questi molti mondi il più reali possibile in primo luogo (e principalmente) attraverso la musica con l’uso di strumenti software che suonano ultraterreni; poi in secondo luogo attraverso immagini, costumi e performance. I miei testi si sviluppano dall’esperienza personale, quindi a seconda della particolare emozione che viene provocata durante questo processo di costruzione del mondo/personaggio, creo i testi che meglio si adattano alla melodia e a questo nuovo “mondo”.

Di cosa parlano le tue canzoni? Quali messaggi vuoi trasmettere al pubblico con la tua musica?

I miei testi si concentrano su giustizia sociale, salute mentale, femminismo, amore e sessualità, mentre le melodie e gli strumenti attingono da ispirazioni fantascientifiche, elettroniche, futuristiche e fantasy. In definitiva, voglio che l’umanità si senta autorizzata e guidi con amore, nonostante tutte le sfide che la società pone. La musica ha un modo per connettere le persone e spero che la mia musica possa offrire questa opportunità di connessione. Inoltre, attraverso performance e cosplay, spero di ispirare gli ascoltatori e i membri del pubblico a essere se stessi ed esplorare il proprio potenziale attraverso l’arte, la musica, la moda, la danza, il trucco e, naturalmente, la fantascienza e il fantasy. Il mio EP offre tre canzoni: “Sentient”, “Brilliant Minds” e “The Ascent”. “Sentient” è la canzone introduttiva di Synthia Looper e racconta la storia di come è stata trasformata in un essere informatico senziente, oltre a sottolineare il suo amore per gli altri esseri senzienti. È una metafora dell’uguaglianza e dell’amare se stessi e gli altri, nonostante razza, età, sesso, credo religioso, orientamento sessuale, aspetto, ecc. “Brilliant Minds” parla della pandemia durante la quale leadership e trasparenza si sono dissolte, rafforzando ulteriormente la disuguaglianza, la disinformazione devastazione per così tanti in tutto il mondo. Se dovessi descrivere la tua musica al tuo pubblico, il tuo sound, come lo definiresti?

La mia musica è un po’ difficile da classificare in un genere. Tuttavia, credo che Synth Pop / Indie Pop Rock lo catturi al meglio. I suoni ultraterreni sono una bella miscela di elettronica oscura, spigolosa, synthpop ed sognante mentre i testi parlano di amore, perdita, sesso e giustizia sociale. Insieme, ogni canzone evoca visioni di regni futuristici ed eterei. La mia missione è trasportare gli ascoltatori in mondi in cui la delicata bellezza e il romanticismo coesistono con l’oscurità, la luce e la cibernetica e spero per tutti coloro che ascoltano di aver raggiunto questo obiettivo.

Chi sono gli artisti che ami particolarmente?

La mia lista di artisti che amo è ampia, ma alcuni dei miei preferiti che mi vengono in mente sono Bjork, Depeche Mode, Phantogram, Puscifer, Massive Attack, Imogen Heap, Azure Ray e Goldfrapp.

Quali programmi per pc o strumenti usi per fare la tua musica?

Uso Logic Pro per registrare e produrre musica. Utilizzo anche una tastiera midi, un campionatore/sequencer Akai Force, una stazione Boss RC-505 Loop, un processore di effetti vocali, una chitarra elettrica e un microfono a condensatore.

Quanto ti piace suonare dal vivo? Com’è il tuo concerto perfetto?

Adoro assolutamente esibirmi dal vivo. Penso che sia uno dei modi migliori per ritrarre il mondo in cui sto cercando di trasportare gli ascoltatori. Mi vesto con vari costumi futuristici/sexy/stravaganti, incorporo luci di scena e talvolta proiezioni. Mi piace pensare che sto organizzando la mia festa quando mi esibisco e che gli ascoltatori sono invitati a unirsi a me e ballare con me in qualsiasi momento. Per quanto riguarda il mio concerto perfetto, immagino di indossare costumi LED, avere ballerini sul palco con me che fanno danze coreografiche e molte luci e proiezioni che ritraggono ulteriormente un regno fantastico e futuristico in cui l’intero pubblico si unisce al divertimento cantando, ballando, e celebrare un mondo di tecno-futurismo e amore. Mi piacerebbe persino trovare modi per rendere un concerto in realtà virtuale accessibile al pubblico di tutto il mondo.

Cosa stai pianificando per il futuro?

Sto vivendo il momento migliore della mia vita come Synthia e sto lavorando molto duramente per raggiungere i vari obiettivi che ho per questo progetto. Al momento, il mio focus è sulle esibizioni dal vivo e sul rilascio di un album completo entro la fine del 2023 (yay!). Inoltre, voglio suonare a festival musicali in tutto il mondo, fare da modella per varie riviste creative, imparare la fotografia e la stampa 3D per creare costumi unici e futuristici per i miei servizi video/fotografici, aiutare importanti cause di giustizia sociale come artista… l’elenco potrebbe continuare. Ho così tanti piani entusiasmanti in atto! Detto questo, credo che la chiave per una vita felice sia l’equilibrio e poiché sono una maniaca del lavoro, ho la tendenza a lavorare troppo per raggiungere i miei obiettivi. Anche se certamente mi piacerebbe arrivare fino al raggiungimento della fama mondiale, non sono disposto a trascurare e rischiare il benessere mio e della mia famiglia per raggiungere questo obiettivo. Pertanto, come Synthia, sto sfidando me stessa ad affrontare ogni compito e obiettivo con quanta più grazia e pazienza possibile. Questo mi permette di godermi il viaggio come musicista, invece di lavorare instancabilmente, solo per raggiungere il mio obiettivo e sentirmi svuotata, esausta e insoddisfatta. Di conseguenza, non sono del tutto sicura se raggiungerò la fama mondiale o tutti i miei obiettivi, ma trovo grande gioia e appagamento nel sapere che farò del mio meglio per arrivarci e divertirmi mentre lo faccio. Qualunque cosa accada con Synthia, non smetterò mai di creare, perché in fondo sarò sempre un’artista.

Puoi darci qualche anticipazione sul video di “Sentient”?

Sono così incredibilmente entusiasta di pubblicare “Sentient”!’Sentient’ descrive la storia delle origini fantascientifiche di Synthia Looper (un Synthapien, o homosapien sintetico che è in parte umano, alieno e androide). Il film è strutturato in tre atti, il primo dei quali mette in luce i macchinari e la tecnologia utilizzati per creare Synthia. Piuttosto che un laboratorio pulito, bianco e sterile, Synthia è creata in un luogo di foschia e sporcizia, a simboleggiare l’oscurità inquietante e la disperazione di questo mondo cibernetico. Man mano che la forma di Synthia progredisce nell’Atto II, diventa un essere informatico oscuro, arrabbiato e completamente formato la cui missione è proteggere l’umanità, o per lo meno il frammento di speranza rimasto in questo mondo estenuante. Impostata sulla vendetta nell’Atto III, Synthia indossa un’estetica giocosa e futuristica e diventa quasi una sirena con la speranza di attirare coloro che sono ritenuti corrotti, per i quali ha abilmente formulato un piano di attacco. “Sentient” rappresenta l’amore di Synthia Looper per gli altri esseri senzienti. Il testo, in particolare il ritornello, è una metafora dell’uguaglianza e dell’amare se stessi e gli altri nonostante la razza, l’età, il sesso, le credenze religiose e l’orientamento sessuale. In fondo, Synthia è una umanitaria e non smetterà mai di lottare contro le ingiustizie del mondo.

In un mondo che crolla sotto vari aspetti qual è secondo te il ruolo della musica?

Sono così incredibilmente grato per la mia famiglia e la nostra salute, ma come persona altamente sensibile, il costante caos globale di questi ultimi anni è stato a volte troppo travolgente ed era chiaro che avevo bisogno di uno sfogo salutare. Pertanto, ho creato Synthia come mezzo per far fronte a tutte queste turbolenze e fornire più equilibrio e felicità nella mia vita. Come Synthia, posso finalmente essere l’artista autorizzata, forte e audace che so che avrei sempre dovuto essere. Ora sono più felice di quanto non sia mai stato. È diventato ovvio per me che la musica può offrire tanta gioia non solo ai musicisti, ma anche agli ascoltatori. È una forma di espressione ed evasione e ci consente di connetterci profondamente gli uni con gli altri. Ci permette anche di essere presenti nel momento con i nostri sentimenti e pensieri; convalida le nostre emozioni; ci dà la possibilità di ballare; e per tanti porta felicità, pace e solleva l’umanità. Abbiamo bisogno della musica ora più che mai, e spero che tutti si permettano di immergersi nella gioia e nella pace che la musica può portare nelle loro vite, sentirsi ispirati e, di conseguenza, vivere la loro vita migliore.

How did the passion for music arise in you?

I’ve always loved music since a young age. It has always provided me with a sense of escape that nothing else in the world can offer. My mother is also an incredibly talented pianist and singer, and so I think I naturally inherited a love of music from her. Within the world of music, I’ve always been most drawn to singing and songwriting. During my childhood and into my teen years, I wrote and performed my own music whenever I had the opportunity. Once I had the chance to record and produce my own songs however, I was absolutely hooked to the world of indie music. After high school, I met my boyfriend (now husband), who is a very talented guitar player, singer, songwriter, and producer. We formed a band and performed together for 10 years, during which time I also developed a love for sci-fi, makeup, cosplay, and graphic novels. Once we decided to start a family, we took a short break from performing, but during this time, we decided to create a project that would allow us to explore all of our passions. Therefore, Sythia Looper was born. As I mention in my bio, Synthia Looper was conceptualized out of a deep love of music, sci-fi, fantasy, makeup, graphic novels, cosplay and social justice. I created her character as a means of coping with all of the turbulence in society, especially in the last few years, while providing myself with a healthy, creative outlet.
Despite all of the political and global chaos, I’m grateful for the recent pop-culture shift (brewing on high especially over the last decade or so) popularizing what I lovingly refer to as nerd-dom (ex: Marvel / DC movies, special effects makeup, cosplay, graphic novels, etc.). The same elements that make nerdom alive and well today are what established the very foundation of creativity my entire life, so it finally felt like the right time to showcase all of my own personal nerdom while exploring so many other facets that weren’t as accessible in the past to create Synthia Looper.

How are any of your songs born? What environment do you create around you?

When a melody or lyric comes to mind, it’s as though a cinematic vision within my mind begins to play out. I’ll first reflect on the emotion provoked by the melody, then I consider what sort of visual this feeling conjures, and it begins to progress from there, shifting into a fantasy story of some sort, like an action sequence, or a theatrical performance that takes place in a sci-fi, cyberpunk or whimsical realm. Then, each of these fantasies becomes its own world, and I build on it (ie the song progresses). I like to think of this process as a term a lot of creatives use called “world building.” I’d also like to mention that Synthia is a Synthapien (or synthetic homosapien that is part human, alien, and android) and I developed her character to have the ability to ‘loop’ through space and time, thus she is capable for becoming a new version of herself based on the current world in which she resides. So, as a song progresses, her character does as well, and this is heavily reflected in her aesthetic. Hence, the various costumes. I absolutely love to make these many worlds as much of a reality as possible firstly (and primarily) through music with the use of software instruments that sound otherworldly; then secondly through visuals, costumes, and performance. My lyrics develop from personal experience, therefore depending on the particular emotion that is provoked during this world / character building process, I create lyrics that best suit the melody and this new ‘world’.

What are your songs about? What messages do you want to convey to the public with your music?

My lyrics concentrate on social justice, mental health, feminism, love, and sexuality, while the melodies and instruments draw from sci-fi, electronic, futuristic, and fantasy inspirations. Ultimately, I want humanity to feel empowered and lead with love, despite all of the challenges society poses. Music has a way of connecting people, and I hope my music can offer this opportunity for connection. Additionally, through performance and cosplay, I hope to inspire listeners and audience members to be themselves and explore their own potential through art, music, fashion, dance, makeup, and of course sci-fi and fantasy. My EP offers three songs: ‘Sentient’, ‘Brilliant Minds’, and ‘The Ascent’. “Sentient” is Synthia Looper’s intro song and tells the story of how she was made into a sentient cyber being, as well as highlights her love for other sentient beings. It is a metaphor for equality and loving oneself and others, despite race, age, sex, religious belief, sexual orientation, looks, etc. “Brilliant Minds” is about the pandemic during which leadership and transparency dissolved, further reinforcing inequality, misinformation and devastation for so many worldwide. It is a song meant to acknowledge and validate the frustration, anger, and sadness we have felt. “The Ascent” is about a mental health breakdown, but ultimately trusting and loving oneself by finding guidance, love, and support from friends and loved ones.

If you had to describe your music to your audience, your sound, how would you define it?

My music is a little difficult to categorize into one genre. However, I believe Synth Pop / Indie Pop Rock captures it best. The otherworldly sounds are a beautiful blend of dark, edgy, synthpop and dreamy electronica; while the lyrics are about love, loss, sex, and social justice. Combined, each song evokes visions of futuristic and ethereal realms. My mission is to transport listeners to worlds where delicate beauty and romance coexist with the dark, the light, and cybernetics, and I hope for all of those who listen that I’ve accomplished this.

My lists of artists I love is extensive, but some of my most favorite who come to mind are Bjork, Depeche Mode, Phantogram, Pucifier, Massive Attack, Imogen Heap, Azure Ray, and Goldfrapp

What pc programs or tools do you use to make your music?

I use Logic Pro to record and produce music. I also utilize a midi keyboard, Akai Force sampler / sequencer, Boss RC-505 Loop station, a voice effects processor, electric guitar, and a condenser mic.

How much do you like playing live? How is your perfect concert?

I absolutely love performing live. I think it’s one of the best ways to portray the world to which I’m trying to transport listeners. I dress in various futuristic / sexy / whimsical costumes, incorporate stage lights, and sometimes projections. I like to think I’m having my own party when I perform, and that listeners are welcome to join in and dance with me at any time. As for my perfect concert, I imagine wearing LED costumes, having dancers on stage with me doing choreographed dancing, and lots of lights and projections that further portray a fantastical, futuristic realm where the entire audience is joining in the fun by singing, dancing, and celebrating a world of techno-futurism and love. I’d even love to find ways to make a virtual reality concert accessible to audience members worldwide.

What are you planning for the future?

I’m having the time of my life as Synthia and I’m working very hard to reach the various goals I have for this project. At the moment, my focus is on live performance and releasing a full-length album by the end of 2023 (yay!). Additionally, I want to play musical festivals worldwide, model for various creative magazines, learn photography and 3D printing to create unique, futuristic costumes for my own video / photo shoots, help important social justice causes as an artist…the list goes on. I have so many exciting plans in motion! With that being said, I believe the key to a happy life is balance, and because I’m a bit of a workaholic, I have a tendency to work too hard at accomplishing my goals. Although I’d certainly love to go as far as achieving worldwide fame, I’m not willing to neglect and risk the wellbeing of myself and my family to attain this goal. Therefore, as Synthia, I’m challenging myself to approach each task and goal with as much grace and patience as possible. This allows me to enjoy the journey as a musician, versus tirelessly working, only to reach my goal and feel drained, burned out, and unfulfilled. As a result, I’m not entirely sure if I’ll accomplish worldwide fame or all of my goals, but I do find great joy and fulfillment in knowing that I’ll do my best to get there and have fun while doing it. No matter what happens with Synthia, I will never stop creating, because at heart, I will always be an artist.

Can you give us some anticipation about the video of “Sentient”?

I am so incredibly excited to release ‘Sentient’! ‘Sentient’ depicts the sci-fi origin story of Synthia Looper (a Synthapien, or synthetic homosapien that is part human, alien, and android). The film is structured in three acts, the first of which highlights the machinery and technology utilized to create Synthia. Rather than a clean, white, and sterile lab, Synthia is created in a place of haze and grime, symbolizing the eerie darkness and despair of this cyber world. As Synthia’s form progresses in Act II, she becomes a dark, angry, fully formed cyber being whose mission is to protect humanity, or at the very least the sliver of hope left in this grueling world. Set on vengeance in Act III, Synthia dons a playful, futuristic aesthetic and becomes almost siren-like with the hopes to lure those deemed corrupt, for whom she has skillfully formulated a plan of attack.‘Sentient’ represents Synthia Looper’s love for other sentient beings. The lyrics, in particular the chorus, is a metaphor for equality and loving oneself and others despite race, age, sex, religious beliefs, and sexual orientation. At her core, Synthia is a humanitarian and will never stop fighting against the injustices of the world.

In a world collapsing in various respects what is the role of music in your opinion?

I am so incredibly grateful for my family and our health, but as a highly sensitive person, the constant global chaos these last few years was too overwhelming at times and it was clear I needed a healthy outlet. Therefore, I created Synthia as a means of coping with all of this turbulence and providing more balance and happiness in my life. As Synthia, I can finally be the empowered, strong, and bold artist I know I was always meant to be. Now, I’m happier than I’ve ever been. It’s become obvious to me that music can provide so much joy for not only musicians, but listeners as well. It’s a form of expression and escapism and allows us to deeply connect with one another. It also allows us to be present in the moment with our feelings and thoughts; validates our emotions; gives us a chance to dance; and for so many it brings happiness, peace, and lifts humanity up. We need music now more than ever, and I hope everyone will allow themselves to immerse in the joy and peace that music can bring into their lives, feel inspired, and live their best life as a result.
