Intervista a Seira
Bentornati su system failure. Ci sono stati cambi di formazione. Come pensate che stia andando con la nuova formazione?
È bello essere tornati, grazie! Molto è cambiato negli ultimi due anni. Ci sono ancora il batterista Stan e io, la cantante Gia, della formazione originale, ma abbiamo due nuovi chitarristi: Arturs e Rich. Arturs è stato il primo a unirsi a noi nel 2020 nel bel mezzo della pandemia. Aveva smesso di suonare la chitarra e non suonava da almeno otto anni, ma quando ha sentito le nostre canzoni se ne è innamorato all’istante. Quindi, quando il nostro chitarrista originale se n’è andato, Arturs ha colto al volo l’opportunità: ha rispolverato le sue vecchie chitarre, ha imparato tutte le canzoni, è venuto alle prove e il resto è storia. Come forse saprai, non ci sono stati concerti durante la pandemia e tutti i locali erano chiusi, quindi noi tre abbiamo avuto molto tempo per imparare di nuovo le nostre vecchie canzoni, finire alcune canzoni che erano rimaste incompiute, pensare al futuro della band e scrivere e registrare nuove canzoni. Ci siamo presto resi conto che avevamo bisogno di un altro chitarrista nella nostra formazione, quindi dopo una lunga ricerca Rich si è unito a noi quest’anno. Dal momento che il suo background è la musica rock, aggiunge un po’ di quella dimensione alla nostra musica, mentre il resto di noi è emo e metalcore. Siamo anche nel bel mezzo della ricerca di un bassista, quindi speriamo di completare presto la nostra formazione.
Abbiamo recensito “Decrypting Parallels” in passato. Adesso è passato del tempo. Come pensate che il vostro sound si sia evoluto e maturato?
Penso che sia ancora in evoluzione e sicuramente non è ancora maturato. Dalle nostre ultime canzoni che non sono ancora uscite, vediamo che ci sono due tipi di Seira. Da un lato, c’è Seira che è fortemente ispirato al metalcore della metà degli anni 2000, inizio 2010, come “Hand of Blood” dei Bullet for My Valentine, “Suicide Season” e “Sempiternal” dei Bring Me the Horizon, ma anche band come Killswitch Engage, Gojira, Trivium e molti altri. D’altra parte, ultimamente, ci siamo divertiti molto a scrivere canzoni allegre ma deprimenti in un formato radiofonico. Lo definiremmo come grunge, emo e shoegaze accelerato con ponti epici e crolli schiaccianti. Canzoni che ti fanno ballare e cantare insieme ma ti colpiscono in faccia verso la fine. Immagina Nirvana, Boston Manor, AFI e The Used mescolati con Gojira, Loathe, Deftones, Norma Jean e Underoath. È un mix agrodolce di emozioni.
Avete pubblicato il nuovo singolo “TOMORROW”. Di cosa parla questa canzone? Come è nata?
“Tomorrow” è il primo tentativo con la nostra formula pop. Un giorno Arturs portò a una prova il bozzetto della canzone. Come al solito, ce l’ha mostrata riff per riff e ce l’ha proposta, per così dire, spiegandoci come poteva suonare. E ci è venuto in modo molto naturale: l’idea approssimativa è stata realizzata in un paio di riprese. Penso che sia ancora la nostra canzone più facile da scrivere. Il messaggio è molto schietto e va al punto: voler lasciare il tuo lavoro. L’idea ci è venuta perché, in quel periodo, ci sentivamo molto stanchi e annoiati del nostro lavoro. Probabilmente ci sentiamo tutti così a un certo punto e pensiamo di iniziare qualcosa di nuovo, quindi abbiamo deciso di mettere fuori quei sentimenti.
Dove è stato girato il video di Tomorrow? Diteci tutto….
È stato girato in uno studio cinematografico a Riga durante un fine settimana insieme ad amici. Siamo molto fortunati ad avere amici che filmano e producono professionalmente, quindi è stato fantastico lavorare con loro durante la produzione e le riprese del video. Tutto, dall’idea del video al montaggio del video, è stato fatto insieme ad amici. È stato piuttosto difficile e ha richiesto molto tempo, ma alla fine il processo di ripresa è stato molto divertente e ci ha uniti ancora di più come band. Abbiamo scoperto che il nostro batterista Stan, il personaggio principale del video, è un attore decente (per la prima volta che recita) e ha molta energia e idee pazze, mentre il resto di noi ci ha mostrato l’un l’altro che siamo bravi giocatori di squadra anche al di fuori della scrittura musicale.
Cosa consiglieresti a te stesso e a chi decide di provare a vivere di musica?
Tutti noi abbiamo un lavoro dalle nove alle cinque e facciamo musica durante il nostro tempo libero, quindi non ci guadagniamo da vivere con la musica, ma penso che sia importante ricordare che la musica è l’espressione di se stessi, quindi non dovremmo inseguire la fama e il riconoscimento scrivendo musica che non risuoni con noi. Anche se è sicuramente facile perdersi mentre si insegue il riconoscimento poiché ci si sente più vicini che mai grazie ai social media. Per dirla senza mezzi termini, l’arte genuina riunisce persone autentiche, e noi preferiamo essere genuini nessuno piuttosto che finti qualcuno.
La musica è sicuramente un viaggio interiore…. Provate a commentare questa frase….
La musica, proprio come la letteratura, i film o qualsiasi altra forma d’arte, può portarci in posti nuovi e può insegnarci qualcosa di nuovo su noi stessi e sulle altre persone nella nostra vita. La musica è stata probabilmente la mia compagna più fedele, non so cosa o dove sarei finito senza musica. Non poteva essere un buon posto, questo è sicuro.
Come scrivete di solito i testi delle tue canzoni?
Quando ascolto la musica, ricevo associazioni. Di solito è solo una singola parola o un sentimento, che poi si trasforma in un messaggio e nel testo di una canzone. Ad esempio, il titolo provvisorio di Tomorrow era The Train Song perché il riff del ritornello emanava la sensazione di libertà e apertura. Immagina un protagonista di un film d’azione che viaggia sul tetto di un treno senza fregarsene. Questa è la sensazione che abbiamo cercato di catturare nella canzone. Essere il protagonista della tua vita, lasciare il tuo lavoro semplicemente uscendo dalla porta e non preoccuparti del mondo.
Secondo te, qual è la cosa più importante nello scrivere una canzone?
Per me è catturare un momento o un sentimento, raccontare una storia.
Hai mai paura di rivelare aspetti della tua vita personale agli estranei attraverso la tua musica?
No. Mettere fuori musica raccapricciante è più terribile. 😀
Qual è il verso migliore che tu abbia mai scritto (o il più significativo per te)?
Le cose che risuonano di più con me cambiano di volta in volta, ma al momento è questa. Viene da una canzone che non abbiamo ancora pubblicato.

Welcome back to system failure. There have been lineup changes. How do you think it’s going with the new lineup?
It’s nice to be back, thank you! A lot has changed over the last couple of years. There’s still the drummer Stan and me, the vocalist Gia, from the original lineup, but we have two new guitar players – Arturs and Rich. Arturs was the first to join us in 2020 in the middle of the pandemic. He had quit playing the guitar and hadn’t played for eight years at least, but when he heard our songs, he instantly fell in love with it. So when our original guitarist left, Arturs jumped on the opportunity – he dusted off his old guitars, learned all the songs, came to a rehearsal, and the rest is history. As you might know, there were no concerts during the pandemic and all the venues were closed, so the three of us had a lot of time to relearn our old songs, finish some songs that were left unfinished, think about the future of the band, and write and record new songs. We soon realised that we needed another guitar player in our lineup, so after a long search Rich joined us this year. Since his background is rock music, he adds a little bit of that dimension to our music, whereas the rest of us are emo and metalcore kids. We are also in the middle of looking for a bass player, so we hope that we will complete our lineup soon.
We have reviewed “Decrypting Parallels” in the past. Now some time has passed. How do you think your sound has evolved and matured?
I think that it’s still evolving and it definitely hasn’t matured yet. From our newest songs that haven’t come out yet, we see that there are two kinds of Seira. On the one hand, there’s Seira that is heavily inspired by the mid-2000s, early 2010s metalcore, such as Hand of Blood by Bullet for My Valentine, Suicide Season and Sempiternal by Bring Me the Horizon, also bands like Killswitch Engage, Gojira, Trivium, and many others. On the other hand, lately, we’ve had lots of fun writing upbeat, yet depressing songs in a radio-friendly format. We would define it as grunge, emo and sped-up shoegaze with epic bridges and crushing breakdowns. Songs that kinda make you dance and sing along but punch you in the face towards the end. Imagine Nirvana, Boston Manor, AFI and The Used mixed with Gojira, Loathe, Deftones, Norma Jean and Underoath. It’s a bittersweet mix of emotions.
You have released the new single “TOMORROW”. What is this song about? How was it born?
Tomorrow is the first attempt at our poppy formula. One day, Arturs brought the rough sketch of the song to a rehearsal. As usual, he showed it riff by riff and pitched it to us, so to say, explaining what it could sound like. And it came to us very naturally – the rough idea was done in a couple takes. I think that it still is our easiest song to write. The message is very blunt and to the point – wanting to quit your job. The idea came to us because, at that time, we felt very tired and bored of our jobs. We all probably feel like that at some point and think about starting something new, so we decided to put those feelings out.
Where was the Tomorrow video filmed? Tell us everything….
It was filmed in a film studio in Riga over a weekend together with friends. We are very lucky to have friends that film and produce professionally, so it was awesome to work with them during the production and filming of the video. Everything starting from the video idea to the editing of the video was done together with friends. It was pretty hard and required lots of time, but in the end the filming process was very fun and bonded us even more as a band. We found out that our drummer Stan, the main character in the video, is a decent actor (for his first time acting) and has lots of energy and crazy ideas, whereas the rest of us showed to each other that we are good team players outside of music writing, too.
What would you recommend to yourself and to those who decide to try to live on music?
All of us have nine-to-five jobs and we do music during our free time, so we don’t earn our living from music, but I think that it’s important to remember that music is the expression of oneself, so we should not chase the fame and recognition by writing music that does not ring with us. Though it definitely is easy to lose ourselves while chasing recognition since it feels closer than ever because of social media. To put it bluntly, genuine art brings genuine people together, and we rather be genuine nobodies than fake somebodies.

Music, just like literature, movies, or any other form of art can take us to new places and can teach us something new about ourselves and other people in our lives. Music has probably been my most loyal companion, I don’t know what or where I would have ended up without music. It couldn’t be a good place, that’s for sure.
How do you usually write the lyrics of your songs?
When I hear music, I get associations. Usually it’s just a single word or a feeling, which then snowballs into a message and lyrics for a song. For example, the working title of Tomorrow was The Train Song because the chorus riff gave off the feeling of freedom and openness. Imagine a protagonist of an action movie riding on the roof of a train not giving a f*ck. That’s the feeling we tried to capture in the song. Being the main character of your life, quitting your job by just walking out the door and not having a care in the world.
In your opinion, what is the most important thing in writing a song?
For me, it’s to capture a moment or a feeling, to tell a story.
Are you ever afraid of revealing aspects of your personal life to strangers through your music?
No. Putting out cringy music is more dreadful. 😀
What’s the best verse you’ve ever written (or the most meaningful to you)?
The things that resonate with me the most change from time to time, but at the moment it’s this one. It’s from a song we haven’t released yet.
