LOVE GHOST – Payback | SYSTEM FAILURE

Apriamo come fosse un regalo il nuovo singolo dei Love Ghost, in collaborazione con SKOLD, dal titolo “Payback”.

Arpeggio di chitarra, ok…cassa in battere, ok…il flanger da destra a sinistra con quella chiusura sulle bassa frequenze e riaperture sulle alte che innesca il delay. Mi pare proprio lo stesso preset, o molto simile dell’inizio di ‘Enter Sandman’ – Metallica / Black Album. Non mi da fastidio, ma da invece una bell’aria al brano.

Nel video vediamo la nostra vecchia conoscenza Finn (andate a trovare le precedenti recensioni sui LOVE GHOST qui su System Failure) presenza fissa e regolare, questa volta con attitudine e immagine da giovane bella copia di Marilyn Manson…accompagnato da SKOLD, un altro musicista che con il “Reverendo” Marilyn Manson ha effettivamente collaborato, insieme ad altri nomi di riguardo ed ha anche prodotto il brano.

Direi infatti che è uno dei pezzi piú rock dei Love Ghost, dalla struttura semplice che presenta effettivamente il classico ‘dittico alla Manson’ ovvero strofa sussurrata e tesa con arpeggio/riff ripetitivo ed esplosione dinamica su ritornello urlato (anche se in questo caso Finn sapientemente si risparmia e usa invece moltiplicazione di voci riempiendo lo stesso campo di frequenze di uno scream) e il giro d’accordi diventa dissonante ma bello, dando al brano la ‘spigolosità’ che il testo richiede.

Vendetta, redenzione…sono i temi affrontati. Non scorgo nulla di iconico nel testo se non la perfetta funzionalità nella cornice musicale.

Attira l’attenzione una apparente migliorata maturità vocale di Finn che abbandona il Millennial Hoop per melodie piú ‘adulte’, anche per un fattore naturale e fisiologico che gli arricchisce la voce di frequenze, non soltanto per un miglior lavoro del fonico…

Essendo piú vicino ad un certo tipo di ascolti miei regressi, lo ascriverei tra i miei brani preferiti per questa band. Per chi li avvicina per la prima volta, consiglio di sentire gli altri brani recensiti qui, per capirne la varietà e complessità di colori.

Let’s open the new single by Love Ghost, in collaboration with SKOLD, entitled “Payback” as if it were a gift.

Guitar arpeggio, ok… kick drum, ok… the flanger from right to left with that closure on the low frequencies and reopening on the high frequencies that triggers the delay. I think it’s exactly the same preset, or very similar to the beginning of ‘Enter Sandman’ – Metallica / Black Album. It doesn’t bother me, but instead gives a nice air to the song.

In the video we see our old acquaintance Finn (find the previous LOVE GHOST reviews here on System Failure) fixed and regular presence, this time with the attitude and image of a young copy of Marilyn Manson…accompanied by SKOLD, another musician who with the “Reverend” Marilyn Manson he actually collaborated, together with other names of respect and he also produced the song.

In fact, I would say that it is one of Love Ghost’s rockiest pieces, with a simple structure that effectively presents the classic ‘Manson-style diptych’ or whispered and tense verse with repetitive arpeggio/riff and dynamic explosion on a screamed refrain and the chord line becomes dissonant but beautiful, giving the piece the ‘angularity’ that the text requires.

Revenge, redemption…these are the themes addressed. I see nothing iconic in the text other than perfect functionality in the musical frame.

Attention is drawn to an apparent improved vocal maturity of Finn who abandons the Millennial Hoop for more ‘adult’ melodies, also for a natural and physiological factor that enriches his voice with frequencies, not only for a better work by the sound engineer…

Being closer to a certain type of my regressive listening, I would write it among my favorite songs for this band. For those approaching them for the first time, I recommend listening to the other pieces reviewed here, to understand their variety and complexity of colours.
