Intervista a Eissa(Morphide) – anche in video
Bentornati su System failure. Avete pubblicato il vostro album di debutto “Anhedonia”. Che emozioni avete provato?
Dopo aver pubblicato “Anhedonia” mi sono sentito davvero sollevati, perché questo album era in lavorazione da così tanto tempo e non vedevamo l’ora di pubblicarlo davvero. Ed eravamo così eccitati quando condividevamo i nostri pensieri e le emozioni su questo album. Quindi io sono stata davvero felice di tutto il feedback positivo che ci hai fornito e sono grato per tutto il tuo supporto. Lo apprezzo davvero e penso che sia fantastico. È qualcosa che ci dà la motivazione per continuare a scrivere musica e continuare a esplorare nuovi orizzonti e provare qualcosa di nuovo e sorprenderti ogni volta.
Qual è il filo conduttore che unisce le canzoni di “Anhedonia”?
Una cosa che unisce le canzoni di “Anhedonia” è che ogni canzone parla di persona, personalità, auto-esplorazione, identità personale. Si tratta di qualcosa che ci rende umani e di tutte le lotte che ne derivano. Quindi ogni singola canzone racconta una storia su una persona. Alcune di quelle canzoni sono state ispirate dalla nostra esperienza personale e dal nostro viaggio. Le altre erano principalmente le nostre osservazioni. Questo è qualcosa che abbiamo raccolto dai nostri amici, dalla nostra stessa vita, da persone diverse intorno a noi e l’abbiamo messo tutto in un album.
“Anhedonia” contiene diverse canzoni già pubblicate da te in passato. Poi ci sono le nuove: Catharsis, We are one e Cromulent. Cosa puoi dirci di queste ultime canzoni pubblicate?
Ci sono tre nuove canzoni in Anhedonia che non sono state ascoltate prima, che sono Catharsis, We Are One e Cromulent. E queste tre canzoni sono in realtà molto diverse. Cromulent è una delle nostre prime canzoni e Catharsis e We Are One sono le nostre due ultime canzoni. Tutte loro sono più su un lato melodico, specialmente We Are One e Cromulent, sono più canzoni in stile ballad. Sono tristi, melodiche. Catharsis è un po’ diversa, anche se incorpora ancora tutti quegli elementi di melodie e belle armonie. Queste tre canzoni sono le più, secondo me, emotive. Sono le più belle in termini di melodie. Ecco perché queste canzoni non vengono una dopo l’altra. Sono molto diverse, ma hanno ancora qualcosa in comune, quindi abbiamo deciso che sarebbe stato meglio metterle in posti diversi dell’album, in modo da avere questi alti e bassi di canzoni più pesanti e aggressive e poi questo tempo di recupero con armonie e melodie più belle di cui tutti noi abbiamo effettivamente bisogno di volta in volta. Spero che ti siano piaciuti.
C’è una canzone che ami particolarmente in “Anhedonia”?
C’è una canzone che mi piace molto e l’ho raccontata anche prima dell’uscita dell’album. Si chiama We are one. Questa è la mia canzone preferita dell’album. Penso che questa sia la canzone più personale per me, perché questa era la prima volta che scrivevo testi dal mio cuore in tempo reale. Di solito scrivo la canzone e poi penso a cosa funzionerebbe meglio, quali parole si unirebbero meglio, quale significato voglio dare. Ma con questa canzone ho capito subito di cosa volevo scrivere. Anche quando non era ancora finito, Chris ci stava ancora lavorando, sapevo già di cosa tratterà questa canzone e stavo già suonando con quei testi nella mia mente. Quindi, quando stavamo riscrivendo tutto da zero come per la registrazione finale, non ho cambiato molto i testi, perché sono venuti tutti naturalmente. Questo è il motivo per cui questa canzone è la più personale per me e mi piace molto come colpisce emotivamente e cosa offre alla fine. Sono molto soddisfatto del risultato.
Ho visto/sentito in uno dei tuoi video che vuoi che la musica diventi il tuo lavoro per il futuro. Siete già stati contattati da un’etichetta discografica? Quali sono gli obiettivi che vi siete prefissati per fare della musica il vostro lavoro?
Sì, questo è vero, vogliamo diventare musicisti a tempo pieno, vogliamo lasciare il nostro lavoro e sostanzialmente guadagnare scrivendo musica. Non siamo stati contattati da un’etichetta discografica, e non vogliamo essere sotto nessuna etichetta in questo momento. Non pensiamo che questo sia necessario per noi e per le nostre carriere e pensiamo di poter fare il lavoro da soli. Quello che vogliamo fare è che vogliamo diventare veloci ed efficienti nello scrivere le nostre canzoni. Anhedonia è stato “cucinato” per quattro anni. Vogliamo essere molto più veloci. Vogliamo creare questo processo passo dopo passo su come scrivere le nostre canzoni in modo che escano in un paio di mesi, non tra sei mesi o un anno. Stiamo cercando di capirlo, stiamo cercando di stabilire un pubblico più ampio, stiamo cercando di raggiungere più persone, in modo da poter vivere di tutti i guadagni e della merce e di tutto ciò che riceviamo dalla nostra musica. Ci stiamo lavorando e speriamo che un giorno questo accada.
Mix, master e editing/produzione sono di alto livello. Chi se ne occupa?
Non è un segreto che stiamo registrando tutto noi stessi dal nostro studio di casa e questo vale anche per la produzione. Tutta la produzione è fatta da me e Chris e non lavoriamo con nessun produttore per quanto riguarda la produzione. Ci rivolgiamo ancora ai produttori per mixare e padroneggiare la nostra musica. Siamo stati felici di lavorare con Forrester Savell che ha fatto un lavoro fantastico e assolutamente straordinario con le nostre canzoni. Ma in realtà in futuro vogliamo mixare e padroneggiare la nostra musica da soli, perché Chris sta ancora mixando la mia voce in tutte le nostre cover, quindi lo stiamo già facendo lentamente. Questo ci darà più libertà e più controllo sul tempo di come pubblichiamo la musica. Questa è anche una parte cruciale per diventare musicisti a tempo pieno, per essere in grado di farlo da soli e per essere in grado di controllare la velocità e ogni fase del processo.
Ho visto che i vostri video sono in 4k. Che attrezzatura avete acquistato e chi si occupa del montaggio e delle riprese di questi video?
Stiamo cercando di pubblicare i nostri video musicali in 4K e pensiamo che sia molto importante, perché molti dei nostri amici hanno TV 4K. Abbiamo guardato un paio di video in full HD e non pensiamo che stiano bene su quelli. Per questo stiamo cercando di tenere il passo. Abbiamo acquistato la fotocamera GH5 Lumix Panasonic e stiamo girando i nostri video musicali su questa fotocamera. In termini di riprese, montaggio e tutto il resto, sono io. Sono responsabile di tutti gli aspetti visivi della nostra band. Ma penso che questo sia un input prezioso da parte mia, dal momento che Chris si occuperà di tutto il mix e il master, il che significa che sarebbe giusto per me fare tutto il montaggio video.
Avete programmato un tour per il futuro?
Per quanto riguarda il tour, non abbiamo ancora niente di specifico nella nostra mente. Non vogliamo davvero rischiare ancora, anche se la pandemia è considerata finita. Ma vogliamo dare un’occhiata a come va l’inverno, perché lo scorso inverno sfortunatamente non è stato troppo bello per le band. Gli spettacoli sono stati posticipati e cancellati e non vogliamo occuparci di tutto questo. Vogliamo solo venire e offrire un buon tour e buoni spettacoli a tutti. Quindi vogliamo aspettare almeno fino al 2023. Guarda come vanno le cose, come se la cavano le altre band. Ci sono restrizioni implementate da diversi paesi e, se non ce ne sono, valuteremo qualcosa per il 2023. Sicuramente. Per lo più Europa però. Welcome back to System Failure. You have released your debut album “Anhedonia”. What emotions did you feel?
After releasing “Anhedonia” I actually felt relief, because this album was so long in cooking, and I couldn’t wait to actually release it. And I was so excited when you were sharing your thoughts and emotions about this album. So I was really happy with all the positive feedback you gave us, and I’m thankful for all your support. I really cherish it, and I think this is awesome. It is something that gives us motivation to continue writing music and continue exploring new horizons and trying something new and surprise you every time.
What is the common thread that unites the songs of “Anhedonia”?
One thing that unites “Anhedonia” is that every song is about person, personality, about self-exploration, self-identity. It’s about something that makes us humans and all the struggles that come with it. So every single song is telling a story about a person. Some of those songs were inspired by our personal experience and journey. The others were mostly our observations. This is something we gathered from our friends, from our own life, from different people around us and we put it all in one album.
“Anhedonia” features several songs already published by you in the past. Then there are the new ones: Catharsis, We are one, Cromulent. What can you tell us about these latest released songs?
There are three new songs in Anhedonia that haven’t been heard before, which are Catharsis, We Are One and Cromulent. And these three songs are actually very different. Cromulent is one of our first songs, and Catharsis and We Are One are our two latest songs. All of them are more on a melodic side, especially We Are One and Cromulent, they are more of a ballad style songs. They are sad, melodic. Catharsis is a bit different, even though it still incorporates all those elements of melodies and beautiful harmonies. These three songs are the most, in my opinion, emotional ones. They are more beautiful in terms of melodies. So this is why these songs don’t come one after another. They are very different, but they still have something in common, so we decided that it would be the best to put them in different places on album, so that you have these ups and downs of heavier and more aggressive songs, and then this cooldown with more beautiful harmonies and melodies that all of us actually need from time to time. I hope you enjoyed them.
Is there a song you particularly love in “Anhedonia”?
There is one song that I really like, and I’ve been telling about it even before the album came out. It is called We Are One. This is my favorite song from the album. I think this is the most personal song for me, because this was the first time I was writing lyrics from my heart in real time. Usually, I write the song and then I think about what would work the best, what words would come together the best, what meaning I want to put. But with this song I knew straight away what I wanted to write about. Even when it wasn’t finished yet, Chris was still working on it, I already knew what this song is going to be about, and I was jamming already with those lyrics in my mind. So when we were rewriting everything from scratch as for final recording, I didn’t change too much of lyrics, because they all came out naturally. This is why this song is the most personal for me, and I really like how it hits emotionally and what it delivers in the end. I am very satisfied with the result.
I saw / heard in one of your videos that you want music to become your job for the future. Have you already been contacted by a record label? What are the goals you have set for yourself to make music your work?
Yes, this is true, we want to become full time musicians, we want to quit our jobs and basically earn money by writing music. We weren’t contacted by record label, but we don’t want to be under any label right now. We don’t think this is necessary for us and for our careers, and we think that we can do the job ourselves. What we want to do thought, is we want to be become fast and efficient in writing our songs. Anhedonia was in cooking for four years. We want to be much faster. We want to create this step-by-step process of how we should write our songs so that they come out in a couple of months, not in a half a year or a year. We are trying to figure it out, we are trying to establish bigger audience, we are trying to reach out to more people, so that we could live off all earnings and merchandise and everything we receive from our music. We are working on it, and we hope that one day this will happen.
Mix, master and editing / production are of a high standard. Who takes care of it?
This is not a secret that we are recording everything ourselves from our home studio, and this also applies to production. All the production is done by me and Chris, and we don’t work with any producer production wise. We still reach out to producers to mix and master our music. We were happy to work with Forrester Savell, who did awesome, absolutely amazing job with our songs. But actually in future we want to mix and master our music ourselves, because Chis is still mixing my vocals in all of our covers, so we are slowly doing that already. That will give us more freedom and more control over the tempo of how we release the music. This is also a crucial part of becoming full-time musicians, to be able to do it ourselves and to be able to control the speed and every step of the process.
I saw that your videos are in 4k. What equipment did you buy and who is in charge of editing and shooting for these videos?
We are trying to release our music videos in 4K and we think it is very important, because technology doesn’t stay on one place. Lots of our friends have 4K TVs. We watched couple of videos in full HD and we don’t think they look good on those. This is why we are trying to keep up with the pace. We bought GH5 Lumix Panasonic camera, and we are shooting our music videos on this camera. In terms of shooting, editing and all of that – it’s me. I am responsible for all the visual aspects of our band. But I think this is a valuable input from my side, since Chris will be doing all the mix and master, which means that it would only be fair for me to do all the video editing.
Have you planned a tour for the future?
Regarding the tour, we don’t have anything specific in our mind yet. We really don’t want to risk it yet, even though the pandemic is kind of considered to be over. But we want to have a look at how the winter goes, because last winter unfortunately wasn’t too good for bands. Shows were postponed and cancelled, and we don’t want to deal with all of that. We just want to come and deliver a good tour and good shows to everybody. So we want to wait until at least 2023. See how things go, how other bands deal with it. Are there any restrictions implemented by different countries, and if there are none, then we will be considering something for 2023. Definitely. Mostly Europe though.
