Intervista a Rose Haze
Benvenuti nel nostro sito di musica. Come si è formata la tua band? Come vi siete incontrati?
Kate Ramsey era una musicista solista che ha viaggiato spesso prima di trasferirsi in California nell’autunno del 2019, dove ha costruito una nuova famiglia musicale ora conosciuta come Rose Haze. Kate ha incontrato per la prima volta il chitarrista Ruben Valdez Gonzales online su un sito di networking musicale chiamato Bandmix. Nessuno dei due ha mai utilizzato il sito prima o dopo quella connessione. Yoko Miyakawa, violinista elettrica e bassista, era un’ex conoscente di Kate dal loro stato d’origine, l’Ohio, quindi Kate la chiamò e le chiese di unirsi alla band. Infine, nel 2021, durante uno strano intervento cosmico, hanno acquisito il loro batterista principale, Dustin Coker.
Come prende forma una canzone dei Rose Haze?
Dipende. Kate scrive tutto alla sua base, poi condivide la forma base con gli altri membri che aggiungono i loro livelli, quindi Kate finalizza gli arrangiamenti. Hanno in programma di fare jamming più sciolti per scrivere in modo più olistico come gruppo. È difficile per Rose Haze fare qualcosa allo stesso modo due volte. Lo stile di scrittura di Kate dipende dal suo umore. A volte le parole di una storia diventano una canzone, a volte ascolta una composizione completa con tutte le parti in un sogno e lei fa rapidamente un demo, quindi scrive i testi, a volte si limita a suonare su alcuni accordi e costruisce attorno ad essi, e altre volte semplicemente chiede a Ruben una battuta e inizia a sovrapporre parti diverse.
Di cosa parlano i vostri testi?
Ogni canzone è diversa, ma nel complesso parla di libertà. Libertà dal senso di colpa, libertà di creare e libertà di lasciare che chiunque ti tenga giù.
MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISM, il vostro album. C’è una differenza tra questo album e i vostri lavori precedenti?
È molto diverso. Questo album incorpora dal punto di vista sonoro più un suono anni ’80 rispetto agli altri, ma lo stile prog anni ’70 che si trova in tutta la discografia dei Rose Haze è ancora molto presente. Tutti gli album di Rose Haze sono concept album. In breve, il concetto di prisma di massima sicurezza riguarda il superamento dei tradimenti dei propri cari attraverso la costruzione di un prisma “trasparente” o “di vetro” in cui rimanere completamente protetti dalle persone tossiche, pur mantenendo una caleidoscopica sensibilità arcobaleno sulla vita in generale. In altre parole, trovare l’equilibrio tra l’essere empatici senza dare tutta la tua vita a qualcuno che ti usa e non amareggiarti mai per le sofferenze della vita.
Cosa avete rappresentato con l’artwork di MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISM?
La copertina dell’album di @jessejae è una rappresentazione diretta del concept dell’album, come affermato sopra.
Su quale palco sognate di suonare? Come mai?
Suonare un palco al Levitation fest di Austin, in Texas, è un nostro sogno. Kate ha anche voluto personalmente un tour in Italia perché gli italiani capiscono e apprezzano il prog rock psichedelico.
E se la tua musica fosse un libro, un film o un dipinto?
Non proprio sicuro. Direi che se dovessi scegliere un autore, un regista (in questo caso una coppia di fratelli) e un pittore, direi che la nostra musica è un mashup di Vonnegut, i fratelli Coen e Salvador Dali.
Oltre alla musica, quali arti vi appassionano?
Pittura e cinematografia.
Siamo in un mondo in crisi climatica, sanitaria e geopolitica. Qual è il ruolo della musica in questo mondo?
“Il dovere di un artista è riflettere i tempi”, ha detto Nina Simone. Quindi è il nostro lavoro in un certo senso attirare l’attenzione su questi problemi in qualche modo. Per Rose Haze, il nostro obiettivo è ricordare alle persone come prendersi cura di sé, avere fiducia e praticare la gratitudine per superare le difficoltà del mondo. Non diventiamo troppo direttamente politici, ma usiamo invece riferimenti analogici a ciò che sta succedendo là fuori e come trovare la pace interiore in mezzo a tutto questo.
Com’è la scena musicale indipendente in California?
La California nel suo insieme è fantastica. L’area della baia di San Francisco è dura. I musicisti sono fantastici e si supportano l’un l’altro, ma è difficile portare gente normale agli spettacoli qui, che è spesso attribuita ai cambiamenti socio-economici dal boom tecnologico.
Potete dirmi qualcosa sui vostri progetti futuri?
Scriviamo sempre. Abbiamo un album che non è stato ancora pubblicato e ne registreremo di più. L’obiettivo in questo momento è aggiungere gradualmente nuove canzoni al set e fare tour il più possibile per spingere la musica che è già stata pubblicata. Inoltre, Kate perseguirà una carriera da solista come sintetizzatore modulare insieme a creare con Rose Haze.

Welcome to our music site. How was your band formed? How did you meet?
Kate Ramsey was a solo musician who traveled frequently before moving to California in Autumn of 2019 where she built a new musical family now known as Rose Haze. Kate first met guitarist Ruben Valdez Gonzales online on a music networking site called Bandmix. Neither of them have ever used the site before or after that one connection. Yoko Miyakawa, electric violinist and bassist, was a former acquaintance of Kate’s from their home state Ohio, so Kate called her up and asked her to join the band. Finally in 2021 during a strange cosmic intervention, they acquired their mainstay drummer, Dustin Coker.
How does a Rose Haze song take shape?
Depends. Kate writes everything at its foundation, then shares the basic form with the other members who add their layers, then Kate finalizes the arrangements. They plan to do more loose jamming to write more holistically as a group. It’s hard for Rose Haze to do anything the same way twice. Kate’s writing style depends on her mood. Sometimes words from a story become a song, sometimes she hears a full composition with all of the parts in a dream and quickly demos them then writes the lyrics, sometimes she just jams on a few chords and build around them, and other times she just asks Ruben for a beat and starts layering different parts.
What are your lyrics about?
Every song is different, but on the whole, it’s about freedom. Freedom from guilt, freedom to create, and the freedom to now let anyone keep you down.
MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISM, your album. Is there a difference between this album and your previous works?
It’s a lot different. This album sonically incorporates more of an 80s sound than the others, but the 70s prog stylings found throughout the Rose Haze discography is still very present. All of the full length albums from Rose Haze are concept albums. In brief, the concept of Maximum Security Prism is about overcoming betrayals of loved ones through building a “see-through” or “glass” prism in which to remain fully protected from toxic people, yet keep a kaleidoscopic rainbow sensitivity about life in general. In other words, finding balance between being empathetic without giving your whole life away to someone using you, and never growing bitter from the pains of life.
What did you represent with the MAXIMUM SECURITY PRISM artwork?
The album art by @jessejae is a direct representation of the album’s concept as stated above.
On which stage do you dream of playing? Why?
Playing a stage at Levitation fest in Austin, Texas is a dream of ours. Kate has also personally wanted to tour Italy because Italians understand and value psychedelic prog rock.
What if your music were a book, a film or a painting?
Not really sure. I’d say if I were to pick an author, a filmmaker (in this case a pair of brothers), and a painter, I’d say our music is a mashup of Vonnegut, the Coen Brothers, and Salvador Dali.
Besides music, which arts are you passionate about?
Painting and filmmaking.
We are in a world in a climate, health and geopolitical crisis. What is the role of music in this world?
“An artist’s duty is to reflect the times,” said Nina Simone. So it’s our job in a way to draw attention to these issues in some way. For Rose Haze, our goal is to remind people how to self-care, be confident, and practice gratitude in order to get through the hardships in the world. We don’t get too directly political, but instead use analogical references to what’s going on out there and how to find inner peace amidst it all.
How is the independent music scene in California?
California as a whole is great. The San Francisco bay area is tough. The musicians are amazing and supportive of one another, but it’s hard to get regular folks out to shows here, which is often blamed on the socio-economic changes since the tech boom.
Can you tell me something about your future projects?
We are always writing. We do have an album that isn’t released yet, and will record more. The focus right now is to add new songs to the set gradually and tour as much as we can to push the music that has already been released. Additionally, Kate will be pursuing a solo modular synth career alongside creating with Rose Haze.
