Ispirato da una raccolta di lettere tra Ellie da bambina e sua madre, scritte dopo il divorzio dei suoi genitori, “Mother Mother” documenta il senso di perdita, smarrimento e disperazione di Ellie. È stata un’esperienza fondamentale che ha portato a un punto in cui la mancanza di strumenti per affrontare i suoi sentimenti ha finito per manifestarsi come depressione e un’esistenza dichiaratamente cupa.

Tuttavia, la canzone mette da parte qualsiasi nozione di amarezza covata. Concentrandosi invece sul perdono, la richiesta di Ellie è per la riconciliazione in circostanze molto più probabilmente date all’animosità: alla fine il dolore viene lavato via.

“Mother Mother” è una canzone che si caratterizza per un mood sonoro tanto dark, melanconico. C’è questo beat semplice e dei refrain electro che messi insieme creano una dimensione triste, quasi funerea. Allo stesso tempo in questa canzone c’è tanta tensione che cresce piano piano, una tensione palpabile. Come sonorità mi fa pensare a qualcosa di Sigur Ros o Radiohead messo insieme con qualcosa di trip hop alla Portishead o Massive Attack.

La musica di Ellie Madeland arriva come un qualcosa di davvero nuovo, un trip hop sognante e dreamy ma pure funereo o dark come ci dimostra “Mother Mother” o anche il singolo precedente “Out of nowhere”.

Ellie Madeland è la dama della notte electro, quella notte profonda e oscura nella quale tutto può succedere, una notte colma di tensione e di cose inconfessabili….

Ellie Madeland is a Swedish singer-songwriter, based in London & Berlin. Her music has been written and developed in collaboration with UK-based producer Gentle William. Her debut single “Out of Nowhere” was released on October 1st, 2021. Her second single “Mother Mother” was released on 18 March 2022.

Inspired by a collection of letters between Ellie as a child and her mum, written after her parent’s divorce, “Mother Mother” documents Ellie’s sense of loss, bewilderment and desperation. It was a pivotal experience that led to a point where lack of tools to deal with her feelings ended up manifesting as depression and an admittedly grim existence.

However, the song casts aside any notions of harboured bitterness. Instead focussing on forgiveness, Ellie’s plea is for reconciliation in circumstances far more likely given to animosity – in the end the hurt gets washed away.

Single review:

“Mother Mother” is a song that is characterized by a very dark, melancholic sound mood. There is this simple beat and electro refrains that put together create a sad, almost funereal dimension. At the same time in this song there is a lot of tension that grows slowly, a palpable tension. The sound makes me think of something from Sigur Ros or Radiohead put together with something like Portishead or Massive Attack trip hop.
