Recensione dell’ep “Death by Misadventure”:

english version:

Charles Mansion is a 4 piece bluesy psych rock band based in Vancouver BC. Originally formed in Kelowna BC, aka Canada’s desert, the band taps into the roots of Joshua Tree’s desert rock flavors and mixes them with some psych, fuzz and a bit of grunge.

Originally formed when JD (guitar) and Mike (drums) met through their girlfriends at the time, who turned out to be sisters. Mike, being a talented drummer, having good taste in music and also not in 19 other bands, was somewhat of a unicorn… a white whale, and JD knew there was only one thing to do and that’s start a band. Mike brought Brendon (bass) on board with whom he had played with in previous bands. A solid 3 piece for sure, but the cake needed some icing… enter Josh (guitar/vocals) who JD had known for years from being around the music scene.

The band clicked instantly, started writing and playing shows. They recorded and released an EP titled ‘Death By Misadventure’ both online and on vinyl. Their follow up album was thought to have been lost for good, but it was recently discovered that it’s been on Brendon’s computer this whole time. It’s a little unpolished (but that’s how we like it) and is being released on Feb 4 under the name ‘Demonstrations’. The band is also currently putting the finishing touches on new material that they hope to record in the spring.

The band has opened for psych heavyweights Earthless and Sleepy Sun. They also cofounded Tune It Down Turn It Up, (tuneitdownturnitup.com) a multi day psych/stoner/fuzz/doom festival and workshop. The fest featured the legendary Dave Catching in it’s inaugural year, following up the next year with not only Dave again but also long time Queens of the Stone Age sound man, Patrick ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson.

Charles Mansion is planning a tour for the summer of 2022 so stay sharp and watch out for some dates to drop.

Ep review:

It all begins with “The Nuge” with these effusive and so evocative guitar phrases, a song without a doubt bluesy, a sort of very emotional ballad in the debut. When the drums enter the song takes shape with the rhythm. The rhythmic Led Zeppelin / Black Sabbath riffs also make the song so hard rock, a song that in fact ranges from hard rock to blues. The fuzz on the guitars makes the sound so gritty. Josh as the lead vocalist is really a power….

It continues with “Space Navy”. A song with a very cryptic, hinted, enigmatic debut. Then the song opens with some psych rock sound impressions. At times I think about Pearl Jam listening to them. After the two minutes, heavy riffs come in like boulders that create a sound as impassable as a mountain. Then an exciting guitar solo. How beautiful is the “dialogue” between the guitar and the singing … the chorus is splendid … Here comes “Chinese fried cheese” with this very “intriguing” beat and other impressions between psych and blues. A really long song, the longest of the ep, the one that never seems to end … an instrumental (only a few spoken ones appear) so energetic and perky as well as allusive and mental … the guitar here commands undisturbed….

“Tamishi” is the next song with these thundering guitars and other lilting riffs, all so strong. Occasionally there is some “sound pause” of “reflection”. Distortions make our hearts beat strong … same words for Josh’s charismatic singing …. “Tamishi” ends inexorably, really … “Horse with no name” is the song that closes the ep, the cover of the famous piece of America. It begins with such a delicate arpeggio to which the cantato is then supported. Cover beautifully interpreted by the band, made so energetic, in their style.

Charles Mansion is a vigorous, daring band, with its rock it makes us dream, it makes our hearts “tremble” …. The 60s-70s of the last century are their reference, a golden age for rock music. Charles Mansion takes us through the pounding streets of rock, pounding like a thoroughbred difficult to tame, for all those like us who are difficult to tame for our daring spirit….
