Darkness Surrounding – Reality Unreal
“Once torn, now reborn”, opener dell’album, è presente anche con un video su Youtube. La canzone parte con dei riff super marcati in stile groove metal. Poi arriva il growl di Tim a rendere il tutto tanto death metal. Poi arriva il cantato di Tessi ad alleggerire i toni e a contrastare sia Tim che i refrain pesanti: tutto bilanciato, armonioso, in equilibrio in questa dualità. Tessi mi fa pensare a Cristina Scabbia dei Lacuna Coil come pure la dualità del cantato fa pensare alla dualità Cristina Scabbia/Andrea Ferro. A tratti penso pure ai francesi Dust in Mind. Infatti il death metal presente in questa canzone sfocia spesso nel gothic metal.
In “Reality unreal” c’è subito un blast-beat importante. Ascoltando questa band viene facile da pensare pure ai Lamb of God per i suoi tratti death metal. Le tante variazioni rendono il sound anche progressive metal e qui penso ai Vintersea. Bello lo stacco melodico/strumentale dopo circa due minuti e mezzo con arpeggio: crea una pausa tanto meditativa. Poi arrivano di nuovo riff pesanti per rincarare la dose. Un pezzo con grande importanza data allo storytelling. Verso il finale ritmica esplosiva e cantato femminile che serve, come il resto, a rendere il sound tanto stratificato.
“The liberation” è a tratti heavy metal. Sembra che questa band riesca ad esprimere tanti generi musicali tutti insieme, una band davvero difficile da etichettare, da classificare. Una band che possiede un sound incalzante, un songwriting eccelso a mio parere. Le loro canzoni sembrano non finire mai e invece di stancare sembra che vogliamo sempre di più la loro musica che provoca assuefazione. Tutte queste parole sono dettate dall’ascolto di “The liberation”. Anche qui, verso la metà, un intermezzo musicale tanto gothic, tanto fiabesco, da symphonic metal azzarderei…Poi arriva anche uno spoken a rendere il tutto stupendo, tanto narrativo…
“Restless” comincia con dei fraseggi morbidi. Poi altro mood groove metal/death metal e blast beat portentoso. Poi Kessi fa “calmare” il tutto ed eleva il nostro animo con il suo cantato subito in contrasto con il solito growl di Tim. Anche qui variazioni di ritmo repentine e tanto carisma da parte di Kessi e Tim che scatenano sicuramente appeal insieme alla batteria killer di Leonard. Il riffing è sempre sublime. L’esecuzione pure. “Mandatory madness” offre più alternative metal e qui pensiamo più ai Lacuna Coil(quelli più recenti) ma questo solo per alcune parti della canzone.
“Hopeless tragedy” mostra tanta dinamismo, tanta energia. “Nocturnal forest air” pure è presente con un video su Youtube e pure qui pensiamo di nuovo a certo gothic metal. La migliore della serie per noi, la canzone dal grande appeal di questo disco. Qui sembra funzionare tutto a meraviglia….Sembra essere stata concepita per chiudere i concerti…
“Darkest of my days” esordisce con drumming forsennato al quale si innesta il cantato femminile. Poi arrivano pure dei vocalizzi. Anche qui non manca l’appeal e il dinamismo come pure tanta tecnica. “A girl named death” mi fa pensare a qualcosa di The pretty reckless, anche se in chiave più heavy/strong, più death metal. Questa band sembra aver inventato un nuovo modo di fare il death metal…..Dopo la metà canzone dei breakdown eccezionali rendono il tutto tanto sontuoso. Con “Disgusting” finisce il tutto. Anche questa una cavalcata sonora ineccepibile con stacchi accompagnati dal cantato in clean di Kessi. Una martellata nello stomaco questa canzone! Ascoltando questa band come non pensare pure a qualcosa di Arch Enemy.
Darkness Surrounding con “Reality Unreal” ha creato, secondo il mio parere, un mondo sonoro stupefacente mettendo insieme un ibrido di diversi generi con maestria e talento fuori dal comune. Grande songwriting, migliore qualità della band. Grande riffing e ritmica, altre peculiarità che saltano subito agli occhi. I due vocalist sembrano siano nati per cantare insieme, una band che offre un’eccezionale armonia tra i vari membri. Darkness Surrounding ci stupisce e ci convince con “effetti speciali”, ci offre un viaggio sonoro interminabile, un viaggio sonoro che di sicuro cambierà la vostra giornata…Il talento multiforme di Darkness Surrounding è smagliante, visibile da lontano e può essere apprezzato solo se ascoltate l’album con tanta attenzione mirata a cogliere ogni piccolo frammento, ogni piccola variazione di questo grande sforzo narrativo di cui è stata capace questa band…..

Then comes the growl of Tim to make it all so much death metal. Then comes the singing of Tessi to lighten the tones and to contrast both Tim and the heavy refrains: all balanced, harmonious, in equilibrium in this duality. Tessi makes me think of Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil as well as the duality of the singing suggests the duality of Cristina Scabbia / Andrea Ferro. At times I also think of the French Dust in Mind. In fact, the death metal present in this song often leads to gothic metal.
In “Reality unreal” there is immediately an important blast-beat. Listening to this band it is easy to think also of Lamb of God for its death metal traits. The many variations also make the sound progressive metal and here I am thinking of Vintersea. The melodic / instrumental detachment after about two and a half minutes with arpeggio is beautiful: it creates a very meditative pause. Then come heavy riffs again to add to the dose. A piece with great importance given to storytelling. Towards the final explosive rhythmic and feminine singing that serves, like the rest, to make the sound so layered.
“The liberation” is heavy metal at times. It seems that this band is able to express many musical genres all together, a really difficult band to label, to classify. A band that has a pressing sound, an excellent songwriting in my opinion. Their songs seem to never end and instead of tiring it seems like we want more and more of their addictive music. All these words are dictated by listening to “The liberation”. Even here, towards the middle, a musical interlude so gothic, so fairytale, from symphonic metal I would venture … Then comes a spoken one to make everything wonderful, so narrative …
“Restless” begins with soft phrasing. Then another groove metal / death metal mood and portentous blast beat. Then Kessi makes everything “calm down” and raises our soul with her singing immediately in contrast with Tim’s usual growl. Here, too, sudden rhythm variations and a lot of charisma by Kessi and Tim that undoubtedly unleash appeal together with Leonard’s killer drums. The riffing is always sublime. The execution as well. “Mandatory madness” offers more alternative metal and here we think more about Lacuna Coil (the more recent ones) but this is only for some parts of the song.
“Hopeless tragedy” shows a lot of dynamism, a lot of energy. “Nocturnal forest air” is also present with a video on Youtube and here too we think again of some gothic metal. The best of the series for us, the song with the great appeal of this record. Here everything seems to work perfectly …. It seems to have been conceived to close the concerts …
“Darkest of my days” begins with frenzied drumming to which the female singing is grafted. Then come some vocalizations as well. Here, too, there is no lack of appeal and dynamism as well as a lot of technique. “A girl named death” makes me think of something from The pretty reckless, albeit in a more heavy / strong key, more death metal. This band seems to have invented a new way to do death metal… ..After the mid-song the great breakdowns make it all so sumptuous. With “Disgusting” it all ends. This too is an impeccable sonic ride with cuts accompanied by Kessi’s clean vocals. A hammer in the stomach this song! Listening to this band how not to think about something of Arch Enemy as well.
Darkness Surrounding with “Reality Unreal” has created, in my opinion, an amazing sound world by putting together a hybrid of different genres with extraordinary talent. Great songwriting, best band quality. Great riffing and rhythm, other peculiarities that immediately catch the eye. The two vocalists seem to have been born to sing together, a band that offers exceptional harmony between the various members. Darkness Surrounding amazes us and convinces us with “special effects”, offers us an endless sonic journey, a sonic journey that is sure to change your day … The multifaceted talent of Darkness Surrounding is dazzling, visible from afar and can only be appreciated if you listen the album with so much attention aimed at capturing every little fragment, every little variation of this great narrative effort of which this band was capable …
