Triangolo Oslo, Roma, Istanbul: Frankie&RikiAbi + eXorZm – storia di una cover di Hank Williams ‘So Lonesome I could Cry’
Quelle strane connessioni…quelle scelte degli algoritmi, quella scarica tra un like, un follow e una premiere su youtube. E da una premiere, a tutte le premiere a conversazioni private di sostegno, amicizia e collaborazione. Non vorrei essere cosi’ infimo da auto-recensirmi, ma piuttosto approfittare di portare alla luce una storia che ha reso una canzone possibile…e la canzone di per se, non la recensisco…Ve la ascoltate e ne trarrete quello che vi farà sentire. Peró ve la racconto e con la canzone anche la poesia naif psichedelica e il personaggio di eXorZm. Come Frankie&RikiAbi non siamo nuovi alle collaborazioni, dapprima con Demiurgo (già recensito qui su System Faılure), poi con DJ Skyjump (di cui abbiamo un’altro articolo precedente), ultimamente con ‘Dark Lotus’ che é nata dalla spina dorsale di un remix fatto per un’artista giapponese, presentataci da un curatore nipponico, anch’esso vecchio amico di twitter. E probabilmente tra i follow train e le playlist condivise di quest’ultimo che entriamo in contatto con eXorZm, da Oslo, artista post-rock, psichedelico, che gioca con colori vivi e pupazzi in stop motion, una musica di varie influenze, spesso contrastanti, a volte concrete e rock altre volte astratte e sognanti. Grateful Dead, Black Sabbath, Alice in Chains…Frank Zappa… sono alcune delle cose che ci sento. Chitarroni, synth, Hammond, marranzano, ukulele…si armonizzano, dovrebbero spiazzarti ma ti trovi già talmente invischiato nella marmellata psichedelica che ti sembra tutto ok e non vuoi uscirne.
Pensa che dopo una sua traccia di questo tipo, potresti ritrovarti subito dopo un arpeggio Berlin School seguito da una cassa dritta EDM con basso compresso in sidechain by Frankie&RikiAbi. Ecco qual’era piú o meno il giro delle playlist miste (o mistiche) della Pandemia nel 2020. Cominciammo a fare video su youtube per le nostre tracce e chiamare artisti nel giro delle playlist per assistere alle premieres. eXorZm c’era sempre. Nel corso dei mesi molte furono le defezioni, ma lui iniziò a seguire anche il progetto OFF THE GRID (andatevelo a vedere…qui non ne parlo…dico solo che é roba per intenditori o flippati) ad ogni premiere twittavo che se non c’era eXorZm non iniziavo…insomma…in 2 anni ne avrà mancata una…forse.
Magari riuscissi anch’io ad essere cosi’ fedele, se lo merita! E quindi un giorno trovai eXorZm su Instagram con l’ukulele ed un cappello a cilindro che cantava ‘I’m so Lonely I could Cry’ di Hank Williams, il primo, quello vero, quello che inventò la musica country come la conosciamo. Per un lungo periodo sono stato appassionato di country da ascoltatore e musicista attivo. Per me fu una folgorazione! Non é da tutti approdare a Hank Williams e ad una canzone cosi’ triste. Cosi’ gli raccontai la mia storia e decidemmo di farne una cover insieme, ma ambient, cupa, elettronica. Volevo che si sentissero i synth, il legno, la foresta…lui ci ha aggiunto la luna piena e i pipistrelli (entrambi ricorrenti nei suoi lavori) e ovviamente la sua voce calda. Ha anche realizzato il video con i nostri pupazzi in stop motion prendendo spunto dai nostri video precedenti. Due mondi e due latitudini differenti, parallele che si incontrano, un risultato che non avremmo mai ottenuto da soli e che ha sorpreso le nostre aspettative. Infine, cosa impariamo da questa storia? Fare musica per i followers, gli streams, per i soldi, per la fama…e lamentarci contro le major? Il bello della musica non é il fatto di condividerla e suonarla con gli amici? Se guardiamo alle persone dietro i numeri, ci sono storie belle come questa…altrimenti siamo soli, so lonely we could cry…

Ambient psichedelico per questo nuovo singolo del progetto Frankie&RikiAbi in collaborazione con eXorZm. Il cantato fa pensare a qualcosa dei Pink Floyd. I refrain e i tappeti sonori da subito ti martellano la testa e il tutto sembra tanto onirico, mentale. Belle le armonie e le melodie trovate. Si nota una lieve austerità sonora che sembra mirata ad elevare il nostro animo. Come non notare pure una certa aurea “misterica” se si può azzardare il termine….
Frankie&RikiAbi è un progetto da sempre sia votato alla sperimentazione che ad un’elettronica tanto psichedelica. Un progetto anche tanto verace, genuino e l’apporto di eXorZm ha di certo impreziosito il prodotto musicale con questo cantato evanescente….

those choices of the algorhythms, that rush between a like, a follow and a premiere on youtube. From a premiere, to all the premieres to private conversations about support, friendship and collaboration. I would not like to be so cheesy and self review my songs, I’d rather use this occasion to bring to the light a story that made a song possible…and I am not reviewing the song itself…you listen to it and get the feelings that you get. Though I am going to tell you about it, together with the psychedelic naif poetry and the character of eXorZm. As Frankie&RikiAbi we are no strangers to collaborations, first with Demiurgo (already reviewed here on System Failure), then with Dj Skyjump (whose last collaboration has been reviewed here too), more recently with our track ‘Dark Lotus’, born on the backbone of a remix we did for another Japanese artist, which we have been introduced by a Japanese curator, old friend on twitter. Probably among the follow trains and shared playlists of this last friend that we made the first contacts with eXorZm, from Oslo, psychedelic post-rock artist, who plays with lively colors and stop motion clay characters; a music of various influences, often in contrast, sometimes concrete, sometimes dreamy. Grateful Dead, Black Sabbath, Alice in Chains…Frank Zappa…are some of the influences I can hear. Big Guitars, Synths, Hammond, Jaw harp, ukulele…they harmonize each other, they are supposed to puzzle you, but you find yourself so much soaked into the psychedelic jam, that you feel like everything is alright and you don’t want to get out of it. Just think that a track like this, can be easily followed by a Berlin School arpeggiator and an EDM straight kick in 4 with sidechained compressed bass by Frankie&RikiAbi. This was more or less the colorful folk of the mixed (or mystic) playlists in Pandemic times 2020. We as Frankie&RikiAbi started to make videos on youtube to accompany our tracks e call the artists of this playlists round to join us. eXorZm was always there. With the months passing by, there have been many defections, but he in particular started to follow also the OFF THE GRID project (go there and check it, I won’t explain it here…I just say it is stuff for connoisseurs or daydreamers), to every premiere promotion I was twitting that if eXorZm was not there I would not begin…in few words he missed maybe 1 time in 2 years. I wish I could be that loyal myself, he deserves it! Then one day I found ExorZm on IG with a ukulele and a top hat singing ‘I’m so lonesome I could cry’ of Hank Williams, the first one, the real one, the one who invented country music as we know it. For a long time I have been a Country fan as a listener and as an active musician. I was thunderstruck! It is not common to end up with Hank Williams and such a sad tune. So I told him my story and we decided to make a cover of it together, but ambient, dark, electronic.
I wanted the synths, the wood, the forest to be heard….he added the full moon and the bats (common in his works) and his soothing voice indeed. He also created a video with puppets in stop motion representing us, copying them from our previous videos. Two worlds and two different latitudes, matching parallel lines, a result that we could never have obtained by ourselves separately and that exceeded our expectations. In the end, what do we learn from this story? Making music for the followers, the streams, the money, the fame…and complain about the majors? Is the beauty of music the fact that you can share it and play it with your friends? If we look at the people behind the numbers, there are beautiful stories like this one…otherwise we are lonely, so lonesome we could cry…

Psychedelic ambient for this new single from the Frankie & RikiAbi project in collaboration with eXorZm. The singing suggests something of Pink Floyd. The refrains and the sound carpets immediately hammer your head and everything seems so dreamlike, mental. Beautiful harmonies and melodies found. There is a slight sound austerity that seems aimed at elevating our soul. How can we fail to notice a certain “mystery” aura if we can venture the term….
Frankie & RikiAbi is a project that has always been devoted to experimentation and to such psychedelic electronics. A project that is also so true, genuine and the contribution of eXorZm has certainly embellished the musical product with this evanescent singing….
