Omnimar – Darkpop

English version:

If we take Depeche Mode music from years past and make it darker and with a sinister and gloomy appeal we get the contemporary dark pop of bands like Omnimar and Night Club from Los Angeles. And what is the name of the latest Omnimar album after the previous “Poison”? Well it’s called “Darkpop” and a better title could not be chosen in our opinion because this band is one of the champions of this sound movement so current that it is a “reinterpretation” of something already heard in the past. Attention … Revisitation not as a slavish copy but as a well thought out elaboration and evolution.

After this discourse on dark pop let’s move on to the album … The opener “Wishing for life” definitely stands out, a song with this synth so much ambient that it seems a sort of “contemporary organ”. Simple beat and songwriting to enhance the catchy sounds and the charismatic singing of lead vocalist Maria Mar. The magnetic chorus makes the song so attractive. Nice bridge with synth solo.

“Oxygene” brings us this martial synth that reminds us that Omnimar, among other things, is a really tough band. In fact, both in its more remote and more recent past there is no lack of harsh, marked, at times industrial sounds. In Omnimar we find these harsh sounds with others that are softer and more velvety, always in the groove in such a bewitching dark pop. The chorus here as it is elsewhere is irresistible. Martial synth also in what can be considered the hymn of the band or “Music is my everything”, the hymn for the rowdy crowds who listen to Omnimar. Martial synth also in “Humans”. Here the industrial is the master of the scene. Nice contrast, as often happens, with the chorus.

We like “You and I” for the climax in the middle of the piece, a great variation in our opinion. Here as in other parts of the album we appreciate the versatility in the singing of the lead vocalist Maria Mar who focuses so much attention from the listener. Also a lot of sound power and vocal range from this artist. Here, too, incredible chorus.

“Feels like velvet” is the last one that we mention: that chorus is really amazing as well as the vocal expressions or vocalizations of Maria.

“Darkpop” is to be listened to and loved…. You literally have to be sucked into the black hole that bears the name Omnimar, a sort of sound wormhole that can lead to catharsis, to inner regeneration. Great is also the storytelling of this band, both in the music, both in the words, and in the videos, a band that fills your soul with its boundless sound and passionate universe…
