Make me Stay Tonight, il nuovo singolo dei Love Ghost

I Love Ghost sono nati e sempre saranno una band rock americana. Nati in California hanno iniziato a sfornare grande musica sui digital stores da una decina di anni. Negli ultimi anni si sono aperti al Messico collaborando con alcuni artisti emergenti trap ed il loro sound ha risentito anche di influenze e collaboratori europei, celebre la collaborazione con The Skinner Brothers.

Detto ciò, era da tempo che la band non produceva un brano prettamente a stelle e strisce, addirittura collaborando con un’artista conterranea, Reverie, che ha già collaborato con la band nel brano Hallucinations.

La traccia, dal titolo Make me Stay Tonight, si apre e si sviluppa su un giro di chitarra, malinconico e costante, che ricorda quello di Drown degli Smashing Pumpkins e fa da spina dorsale a tutto il brano. Questo loop minimalista evoca immediatamente le atmosfere dell’emo-grunge e del post-grunge dei primi anni 2000 creando un tappeto sonoro intimo ma tormentato.

La batteria è trap/hip-hop, caratterizzata da beat netti e hi-hat veloci e genera, in effetti, un certo contrasto: l’elemento rock è ben rappresentato dalla band, mentre la parte rap è dato dalla presenza di Reverie.

Se il pre-chorus è un momento nostalgico e distaccato, l’influenza della Smashing Pumpkins ritorna nelle chitarre del ritornello, psichedeliche e caratterizzate da un sound alternative rock.

Il brano è anche basato su un contrasto vocale: se la prima strofa, affidata a Finnegan Bell è graffiante, sofferta e tipicamente rock. La voce femminile di Reverie svela un approccio totalmente diverso. Il suo è un flow quasi recitato, un mix tra urban e pop-punk. Il tono è apparentemente distaccato, quasi cinico.

Dopo il secondo ritornello la chiusura con il pianoforte aggiunge al brano un qualcosa di rassegnato e nostalgico.

Con questo brano la band traccia la perfetta linea tra il grande rock degli anni ‘90 e le nuove tendenze trap o rap giovanili.

Love Ghost were born and always will be an American rock band. Born in California, they’ve been churning out great music on digital stores for about a decade. In recent years, they’ve branched out into Mexico, collaborating with emerging trap artists, and their sound has also been influenced by European influences and collaborators, most notably with The Skinner Brothers.

That said, it’s been a while since the band produced a truly American song, even collaborating with fellow American artist Reverie, who previously collaborated with the band on the song Hallucinations.

The track, titled “Make Me Stay Tonight,” opens and develops with a melancholic, steady guitar riff reminiscent of the Smashing Pumpkins’ “Drown,” which serves as the backbone of the entire song. This minimalist loop immediately evokes the emo-grunge and post-grunge atmospheres of the early 2000s creating an intimate yet tormented soundtrack.

The trap/hip-hop drumming, characterized by crisp beats and fast hi-hats, creates a certain contrast: the rock element is well represented by the band, while the rap part is indicative of Reverie’s presence.

If the pre-chorus is a nostalgic and detached moment, the Smashing Pumpkins influence returns in the chorus’ psychedelic guitars, characterized by an alternative rock sound.

The song is also based on a vocal contrast: while the first verse, entrusted to Finnegan Bell, is scathing, anguished, and typically rock; Reverie’s female voice reveals a completely different approach. Her flow is almost recited, a mix of urban and pop-punk. The tone is seemingly detached, almost cynical.

After the second chorus, the piano finale adds a resigned and nostalgic quality to the song.

With this song, the band draws the perfect line between the great rock of the ’90s and the new trap and youth rap trends.
