Intervista a Letchen Grey
Benvenuti su system failure. Come vi siete conosciuti?
Grazie per il vostro interesse.. Mi sono unito ai Letchen Grey nel 1985. La band era fuori da un paio d’anni e ho risposto ad un annuncio per bassista. Abbiamo poi scritto l’EP “Party Politics” un anno dopo mi sono separato e ho continuato a scrivere e ad esibirmi con altri gruppi. Siamo rimasti tutti amici nel corso degli anni e nel 2019 Mark Andersen, il fondatore di Letchen Grey e io abbiamo iniziato a suonare in una cover/bar band per divertimento. Abbiamo iniziato a scrivere la nostra musica originale e Letchen Grey è rinata.
Letchen Grey. Perché avete scelto questo nome in passato?
Il nome è stato scelto prima che io mi unissi ed era interessante per il periodo di tempo, ma ecco l’esclusiva di cui ho parlato che System Failure è il primo a saperlo… Ora ci chiamiamo “el G”. Quando mi sono unito alla band ero il bassista e Robert Sykes era alla voce. Ora faccio sia il basso che la voce. La musica non è più il Sunset Strip Metal degli anni ’80 e non vogliamo dare alla gente l’impressione di essere la stessa band. Siamo maturati musicalmente. el G. sono le iniziali di Letchen Grays… una specie di, con una svolta. Come ovviamente sai nella lingua spagnola “el” significa “il” e la “G” può significare qualsiasi cosa… “Gallo”… gallo. “Gato”….cat. “Guapo”…..bello. Quindi ci sono molte possibilità per le immagini e simili. Ora siamo una band che scrive ed esegue diversi stili musicali. Non vogliamo essere incasellati in un certo genere, ma volevamo menzionare i nostri inizi.
“Burn”. Di cosa parla questa canzone?
“Burn” è una canzone su qualsiasi grande città che attira le persone…..come una falena tra le fiamme. Le persone vengono perché hanno un sogno e si rendono conto che non è così facile come pensavano. Le grandi città hanno molte tentazioni a cui a volte è difficile resistere, ma che possono diventare la rovina e la morte delle persone. Stai attento a ciò che desideri…
Letchen Grey sta lavorando a 6 nuovi singoli. Puoi darci qualche anticipazione?
Stiamo scrivendo delle cose fantastiche! Il nostro più recente è “Dancing with the Devil” ha un’atmosfera blues e vecchia degli Aerosmith. “Los Angeles” possiede un’atmosfera più veloce, un po’ punk che racconta la storia della nostra città… come la amiamo e la odiamo allo stesso modo. “No Shame”….è fare tutto il necessario per ottenere ciò che vuoi. Inoltre stiamo lavorando a una cover della canzone di Alarm “Strength”. Ho sempre amato quella canzone e sono entusiasta di farlo.
In un mondo in crisi geopolitica, climatica e sanitaria qual è il ruolo della musica?
Direi di unire le persone. La musica è qualcosa che trascende le nostre differenze. Speriamo che possa anche ispirare. Per me personalmente la musica è stata il mio salvatore e rifugio sicuro. Mi ha dato uno scopo e sempre qualcosa per cui non vedo l’ora… che si tratti di registrare il tempo, o di un concerto imminente o semplicemente di uscire con i ragazzi durante le prove, esercitandosi e scrivendo. È qualcosa che ho sempre amato e che sempre amerò… alcuni non riescono a capirlo e pensano che io e le persone che si sentono uguali a me siamo pazzi…
Potete parlarci del processo creativo dietro la creazione di una delle vostre canzoni?
Di solito inizia con uno di noi che introduce uno o due riff. Poi vediamo come ci fa sentire… è felice o triste, veloce o lento? Mi dà un punto di partenza su come voglio avvicinarmi ai testi. Quindi forse un titolo o un ritornello su cui possiamo lavorare. A volte è piuttosto magico come tutto vada a posto. A volte ci vuole un po’. Ad ogni modo, adoro il processo.
Cosa accomuna tutte le vostre canzoni? Qual è il trait d’union?
Verità, bellezza e amore.
Sul tuo sito ci sono queste parole: “il rock n roll è come la malaria”. Puoi commentarle?
Una volta che sei stato infettato, è difficile liberarsene. Finisce per manifestarsi e prendere una presa più grande nel tuo corpo. Ora sei un portatore e infetti gli altri… in senso buono, e così via.

Welcome to system failure. How did you meet?
Thank you for your interest .. I joined Letchen Grey in 1985. The band had been out for a couple years and I responded to a ad for a bass player. We then wrote the EP ‘Party Politics’ a year later I parted ways and continued writing and performing with other groups. We all remained friends over the years and in 2019 Mark Andersen, LG’s founder and I started play in a cover/bar band for fun. We started writing our own original music and LG was reborn.
Letchen Gray. Why did you choose this name in the past?
The name was chosen before I joined and it was cool for the time period but here’s the exclusive I mentioned that System Failure is tbe first to know…. We are now called ‘el G.’ When I joined the band I was the bass player and Robert Sykes was on vocals. Now I do both bass and vocals. The music isn’t 80’s sunset strip metal any longer and we don’t want to give people the impression that we are the same band. We have matured musically. el G. is Letchen Greys initials…sort of, with a twist. As of course you know in the Spanish language “el” means ‘the’ and the “G” can stand for whatever ….”Gallo”….rooster. “Gato”….cat. “Guapo”…..handsome. So there are many possibilities for imagery and such. We are now a band that writes and performs different styles of music. We don’t want to be pigeonholed into a certain genre, but we wanted to make mention of our beginnings.
“Burn”. What is this song about?
Burn is a song about any big city that draws people to it…..like a moth to the flame. People come because the have a dream and the realize that its not as easy as they thought. Big cities have many temptations that are sometimes hard to resist but that can become a persons downfall and demise. Be careful what you wish for…
Letchen Grey is working on 6 new singles. Can you give us some anticipations?
We are writing some great stuff! Our most recent is “Dancing with the Devil” has a bluesy, old Aerosmith feel. “Los Angeles” is a faster, kinda punk vibe that tells the tale of our city….how we love and hate it equally. “No Shame”….is about doing whatever it takes to get what you want. Also we are working on a cover of the Alarm song “Strength” Ive always loved that song and Im thrilled to be doing it.
In a world in geopolitical, climatic and health crisis what is the role of music?
I would have to say to unite people. Music is something that transcends our differences. Hopefully it can inspire also. For me personally music has been my savior and safe haven. Its given me purpose and always something to look forward to….either time recording, or a upcoming gig or just hanging with the fellas at rehearsal practicing and writing. It’s something Ive always loved and always will…..some can’t understand that and think that me and people that feel the same as me are crazy…
Can you tell us about the creative process behind the creation of one of your songs?
It usually starts with one of us bringing in a riff or two. Then we see how it makes us feel….is it happy or sad, fast or slow? It gives me a starting point how I want to approach the lyrics. Then maybe a title or chorus we can work off of. Sometimes its pretty magical how everything falls in place. Sometimes it takes awhile. Either way I love the process.
What unites all your songs? What is the trait d’union?
Truth, beauty and love.
On your site there are these words: “rock n roll is like malaria”. Can you comment on them?
Once you are infected its hard to get rid of. It ends up manifesting itself and take a bigger hold in your body. Now you are a carrier and you infect others…in a good way, and so on and so forth.
