Intervista a Invisible Joe & The Mushroom Gorilla
Potete parlarci un po’ della vostra musica? Quando e come avete iniziato a fare musica?
Veniamo tutti da diversi background musicali e abbiamo suonato in molti gruppi e progetti. Mike (chitairra) e Ben (basso) hanno iniziato insieme alcuni anni fa, cercando di creare una rock band alternativa, provando con molti altri musicisti. Quando Aline (vocalist) si unì alla band prese forma e ritmo. Aline ha cantato in gruppi acustici e progetti musicali. Hussein (batteria) si è unito per ultimo. Sta arrivando con un lungo disco metal. È stato facile convincerlo. Alcune settimane dopo il nostro completamento siamo entrati nelle tappe regionali.
Quali sono le band o gli artisti che vi ispirano?
A tutti noi piacciono Led Zeppelin, Audioslave, Garbage, Red Hot Chili Peppers, potremmo andare avanti per ore qui. Tuttavia, non vi è alcuna riflessione su come dovrebbe apparire Invisible Joe & The Mushroom Gorilla. Abbiamo provato altri stili – solo per divertimento – pop, anche Schlager, ma sorprendentemente sembrava tutto come noi. Tuttavia, tutti noi amiamo un pugno groovy. Ci piacciono gli elementi ritmici e vogliamo portare avanti la voce di Aline. Prima di registrare l’EP, abbiamo ascoltato molto PJ Harvey. Ammiriamo questo suono diretto: quando guidi in macchina, è come se PJ fosse seduto proprio accanto a te e tutta la band suonasse sui sedili posteriori. Lo abbiamo trovato interessante anche per noi. Henning Strand di Watt Matters Studio ha fatto un ottimo lavoro. Adoriamo ciò che ha fatto.
Cosa volete trasmettere con la vostra musica?
Ci piace suonare dal vivo, cercare di catturare il momento e alimentare le persone con una buona energia. Invisible Joe & The Mushroom Gorilla non assembla musica o sintetizza. Lo manteniamo fino ai quattro strumenti. Quello che vedi è quello che senti. Per noi una canzone è buona se l’ascoltatore la capisce durante il primo ascolto, ma lascia abbastanza elementi in modo che la gente voglia ascoltare di nuovo.
Il vostro nome d’arte “Invisible Joe & The Mushroom Gorilla” nasconde un significato speciale?
All’inizio, quando ci eravamo appena formati, a un certo punto sembrava che ci mancasse del suono. Così abbiamo inventato un Joe invisibile, che è visibile ai membri della band solo consumando vaniglia di funghi magici. La vaniglia darebbe solo un brutto posto nel nostro logo in modo da convertirsi in gorilla. Il gorilla è stato un membro fisso da allora. A volte il ragazzo appare sui nostri social media …
Come prendono vita le tue canzoni? Che tipo di ambiente create per voi stessi quando scrivete una canzone?
Di solito qualcuno viene con un’idea nella sala prove e ci inceppiamo nell’idea cercando di trovare qualcosa in essa. Nella maggior parte dei casi, ci siamo in breve tempo. Se le canzoni non funzionano, le scarichiamo abbastanza rapidamente.
Una domanda per la cantante solista. Hai imparato a cantare da sola o hai frequentato una scuola?
Sì, mi è piaciuta un’educazione classica al canto e sto lavorando con il mio coach ancora oggi. Ascoltando il nostro EP potresti scoprire che questa è una voce atipica per una rock band alternativa. È vero, non ho mai considerato di cantare stili rock. Per me è importante lavorare con il mio corpo e non cantare contro di esso. Per Invisible Joe e The Mushroom Gorilla uso alcuni aspetti della mia voce, ma non tutti – per ora.
Come è nato l’EP “No Title”? Cosa significa questo EP per voi?
Abbiamo avuto l’impressione di aver condensato il nostro suono o il nostro stile a cosa o chi siamo adesso. Volevamo catturare questo stato e portarlo alle persone. C’è stato qualche dibattito nella band se registrare un album completo o un EP. Ovviamente ha vinto la soluzione EP. Questo ep ci porterà un pubblico più vasto e sembra funzionare.
Nel mondo di oggi qual è il ruolo della musica?
Per noi, come band, è una delle cose più importanti della vita. Con la musica ci esprimiamo, prima tra di noi nella band. La musica è un linguaggio universale che tutti parlano. Vogliamo essere ascoltati e apprezziamo se le persone ascoltano la nostra voce e apprezzano.
Oltre alla musica, quali arti preferite?
Hussein adora i film, in particolare cinema italiano e francese degli anni ’60 / ’70. Mike ama la poesia, Ben la fotografia. Ad Aline piace il teatro e il disegno.
Con quale band o musicista vivo o morto vorreste condividere il palco?
Questa domanda porta a grandi discussioni nella band, ahah. Sicuramente con Audioslave, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Led Zeppelin, Garbage, PJ Harvey … QOTSA sarebbe fantastico.
Progetti futuri?
Recentemente abbiamo registrato due video musicali dal vivo. Li pubblicheremo presto. Gli ultimi sei mesi sono stati molto impegnativi. Per le prossime due settimane la sala prove ci riporterà a tempo pieno. Ci sono così tante idee nel cassetto e ci piace lavorare su di esse e renderle nostre. A parte un concorso di band tedesche non ci sono concerti dal vivo per ora. Ma sicuramente suoneremo di nuovo dal vivo. La band è aperta per le prenotazioni per il prossimo anno e speriamo di vedervi presto. Siamo grati per ogni ascoltatore! Diteci, se vi piace la nostra musica!

Can you tell us a bit about your music? When and how did you start making music?
We all come from different musical background and have been playing in many bands and projects. Mike (guitar) and Ben (bass) have started together few years ago, trying to set up an alternative rock band, rehearsing with several other musicians. When Aline (vocalist) joined the band took shape and pace. Aline has been singing in acoustic bands and musical projects. Hussein (drums) joined last. He is coming with a long record in metal. It was easy to convince him. A few weeks after we were complete we entered the regional stages.
What are the bands or artists that inspire you?
We all like Led Zeppelin, Audioslave, Garbage, Red Hot Chili Peppers, we could go on for hours here. However, there is no reflection on how Invisible Joe & The Mushroom Gorilla should sound. We have tried other styles – just for fun – pop, even Schlager, but surprisingly it all sounded like us. However, we all love a groovy punch. We like rhythmic elements and want to carry Aline´s voice forward. Before recording the EP, we listened a lot to PJ Harvey. We admire this direct sound: When you drive in the car, it is like PJ is sitting right next to you and all the band is playing in the back seats. We found that cool for us as well. Henning Strand from Watt Matters Studio has done a great job. We love what he has done.
What do you want to convey with your music?
We like playing live, trying to capture the moment and fuel people with good energy. IJMG do not assemble music or synthesize. We keep it down to the four instruments. What you see is what you hear. For us a song is good if the listener understand it during first listening, but it leaves enough elements so that people want to listen again.
Does your art name “Invisible Joe & The Mushroom Gorilla” conceal any special meaning?
Back in the beginning days, when we just formed, we seemed to miss some sound at some stage. So we invented an invisible Joe, who is visible to band members only by consuming magic mushroom vanilla. The vanilla would give just an ugly spot in our logo so it converted to the gorilla. The gorilla has been a steady member since then. Sometimes the guy appears on our social media…
How do your songs come to life? What kind of environment do you create for yourself when you´re writing a song?
Usually someone comes with an idea to the rehearsal room and we jam around the idea trying to find the spice in it. In most of the cases, we are there in short time. If songs do not work out, we dump them quite quickly. Probably we have all a quite similar understanding of IJMG.
A question for the lead vocalist. Did you learn to sing alone or did you attend any school?
Yes, I enjoyed a classical singing education and I am working with my coach still today. Listening to our EP you may find that this is an untypical voice for an alternative rock band. It is true, I have never considered singing rock styles. For me, it is important to work with my body and not to sing against it. For Invisible Joe & The Mushroom Gorilla I use some aspects of my voice, but not all of them – for now. Nothing is fixed yet, we will see what the future brings.
How was the EP “ No Title” born? What does this EP mean to you?
We had the impression, that we condensed our sound or style to what or who we are now. We wanted to capture this status and bring it to the people. There has been some discussion in the band whether to record a full album or an EP. Obviously the EP solution won. This EP shall bring us a larger audience and it seems to work out.
In today´s world what is the role of music?
For us, as a band, it is one of the most important things in life. With music we express ourselves, firstly among each other in the band. Music is a universal language everybody speaks. We want to be heard and we appreciate if people hear our voice and like it.
In addition to music, which arts do you prefer?
Hussein adores the movies, in particular Italian and French art-house of the 60/70ies. Mike is into poetry, Ben into photography. Aline likes theater and drawing.
What band or musician dead or alive would you share the stage with?
This question leads to big discussions in the band, haha. For sure with Audioslave, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Led Zeppelin, Garbage, PJ Harvey… QOTSA would be awesome.
Future projects?
We have been recording two live music videos recently. They will release soon. The past six months were very busy. For the next couple of weeks the rehearsal room will have us back full time. There are so many ideas in the drawers and we are keen working on them and make them ours. Apart from a german band contest there are no live concerts scheduled for now. But for sure we will be burning to play live again soon. The band is open for bookings for next year and we hope to see you soon. We are grateful for every listener! Tell us, if you like our music!
