Intervista a Chris The Ghost

Puoi raccontare ai nostri lettori come è nata la tua passione per il rap?

Sì, a parte i tanti musicisti nella storia della famiglia. Ho sempre avuto un debole per la musica. Quando ero piccolo mia madre guidava ovunque e ascoltava un po’ di Tupac, 50 cent, Lil Kim, il primo Eminem e roba del genere, con me e il mio fratellino sul sedile posteriore mentre fumavamo sigarette come un treno. -ride Chris- Tutto bene, però, perché mi ha davvero aperto la mente al rap. La cultura e tutto il resto. La mamma l’ha vissuta. Immagino che si trasmetta. Ma ricordo che mi piaceva il modo in cui il basso scuoteva la macchina e come i testi fossero violenti a un’età così giovane.

Quali sono gli artisti o le band che consideri dei grandi riferimenti da cui attingere?

Ho sempre avuto un vizio colpevole per la musica heavy metal, quindi potrei nominare band tutto il giorno. Ma se parliamo di rap diretto, allora direi alcuni degli artisti più aggressivi o più dark come xxxTentacion, Nardo Wick, Kevin Gates, Trippie Redd, roba più gangster del genere. Mi piace quando i rapper sono veri.

Com’è la scena musicale indipendente nel Tennessee?

Se dovessi riassumerla in una parola, direi che è “redditizia”. Knoxville e Chattanooga sono piene di locali aperti agli artisti emergenti e non è lontana da Atlanta, che è un punto di ritrovo per il rap. La capitale del Tennessee (Nashville) è in realtà piuttosto nota per la sua scena country.

“e ha trasformato una stanza in uno studio completamente funzionante“. Puoi raccontarci qualcosa di questo?

Sì, in realtà è una storia vera -ride Chris-. Io e alcuni amici siamo andati a vivere insieme in un grande appartamento con 3 camere da letto nel 2017. Abbiamo sventrato una stanza per mettere l’insonorizzazione ovunque e abbiamo trasformato l’armadio in una cabina con la finestra di vetro per vedere il rapper e tutto il resto. Abbiamo fatto festa per anni e fatto delle hit -ride Chris- Ricordo quando il padrone di casa alla fine ha visto la stanza quando ce ne siamo andati, era incazzato! -ride Chris- Penso di dovergli ancora dei soldi!

Di cosa parla la tua canzone Filth? Come hai incontrato Hellboy e Fantom xxx?

Spesso scrivo di alcune delle mie esperienze per strada. È stata una vita selvaggia. Un tempo ci divertivamo parecchio, soprattutto quando i soldi aumentavano, la situazione diventava intensa. Oggi mi sto concentrando sulla mia musica, ma in passato sono stato un po’ viscido, se ti senti. Le cose sono un po’ diverse ora, questi ragazzi fanno le cose in modo un po’ diverso rispetto a una volta. Le persone iniziano a stare sempre di più in casa. Filth è solo un’altra canzone su qualche vera me….Ho incontrato Hellboy mentre cercavo un interprete per Filth. Ci ho messo una settimana per trovare un’interprete perché volevo che fosse perfetta e lui ha fatto un lavoro eccezionale. Di recente ho incontrato Fantomxxx in una sezione commenti di YouTube, in realtà si è rivelato un ragazzo simpatico e anche molto talentuoso! Abbiamo lavorato insieme a un paio di tracce.

Chi ha montato il video di Filth?

Quando ho firmato per “Anatoly Records” ho notato che gli altri due artisti firmati avevano un video in stile VHS. Quindi ho voluto adattarmi alla famiglia, mostrare il mio rispetto. Io e un tizio che lavora lì chiamato “jack jack” abbiamo rapidamente raccolto un po’ di filmati esistenti e siamo riusciti a modificarli e a metterci sopra un effetto VHS in poche ore -ride Chris- Sono rimasto sinceramente sorpreso quando hanno accettato il video! Quindi è stato onestamente all’ultimo minuto!

Quali sono i tuoi progetti per il futuro?

In questo momento, sto solo cercando di farmi conoscere, fratello, sai. Cerco di farmi ascoltare dalla gente. Il cielo è il limite, amo quello che faccio e lo farò e basta.

Hai mai suonato sul palco? Se non l’hai fatto, sogni di farlo?

Sì, in realtà, per il rap ho fatto qualche spettacolo qua e là, ogni tanto faccio qualcosa di niente di troppo grande. Non so se sono online, beh, potrebbero esserci qualche video in giro.Ma quando ero al liceo ero in una band metal che andava in tournée tutto il tempo. Suonavamo spesso in altri stati. Quella band si è sciolta da tempo. Ma sì, ho rappato sul palco un paio di volte. Ho fatto qualche spettacolo, per lo più di successo, ma c’è stata questa volta che è stata orribile, ma questa è un’altra storia! -Chris ride- Aye grazie per avermi ospitato fratello, è stato divertente! Can you tell our readers how your passion for rap was born?

Yeah, aside from many musicians in the family history. I always kinda had a thing for music, when i was little my mother would drive everywhere bumpin some Tupac, 50 cent, Lil Kim, early Eminem and stuff with me and my little bro in the back seat while smoking cigarettes like a train. -chris laughs-

It’s all good tho because that really opened my mind to rap. The culture and everything. Mom lived it. It passes down I suppose. But I remember I liked how the bass would raddle the car, and how the lyrics were violent at such a young age.

Who are the artists or bands that you consider great references to draw from?

I have always had a guilty pleasure for heavy metal music, so I could name bands all day. But if we talkin straight rap then I’d have to say some of the more aggressive or darker artists like xxxTentacion, Nardo Wick, Kevin Gates, Trippie Redd, more gangster stuff like that. I like it when rappers are real.

How is the independent music scene like in Tennessee?

If I had to sum it up in one word I would say it’s “lucrative”. Knoxville and Chattanooga are full of venues that are open minded to upcoming artists, it’s also not far from Atlanta GA which is a Hotspot for rap. The capital of TN (Nashville) itself is actually quite known for its country music scene.

“and turned a room into a fully functional studio“. Can you tell us about this?

-chris laughs- yeah actually that’s a true story. Me and a few homies went in together on a large 3 bedroom apartment back in 2017. We gutted one room to put like soundproofing everywhere and we changed the closet into a booth with the glass window to see the rapper and everything. We partied so hard for years and made some bangers -chris laughs- I remember when the landlord eventually saw the room when we moved out , he was pis..d ! -chris laughs- I still owe them money I think !

What is your song Filth about? How did you meet Hellboy and Fantom xxx?

I often write about some of my experiences in the streets, It’s been a wild life. Back in the day we used to ball pretty hard especially once the money got up, sh.t got intense. Nowadays I’m focusing on my music but I’ve been a little slimey in the past if you feel. Things are a little different now these kids doing things a little different than back in the day. People starting to stay inside more and more. Filth is just another song about some real sh.t. I Met Hellboy while looking for a feature for Filth. It took me like a week to find a feature because I wanted it to be perfect and he did an outstanding job. I recently met Fantomxxx in a youtube comment section actually, he turned out to be a cool guy and really talented too! We’ve been working on a couple tracks together.

Who edited the video for Filth?

When getting signed on to Anatoly Records I noticed the other two signed artists have a VHS style video. So I wanted to fit in with the fam, show my respects. Me and some guy that works there called “jack jack” quickly gathered some existing footage and managed to edit and slap a VHS effect on it in a few hours -chris laughs- I was honestly surprised when they accepted the video! So it was honestly last minute!

What are your plans for the future?

Right now, just trying to get my name out there brotha you know. Trying to get people to listen. The sky is the limit, I love what I do and ima just do it.

Have you ever played on stage? If not, do you dream of doing so?

Yes actually, for rap I’ve done a few shows here and there,I do every once in a while nothing too big. I don’t know if they’re online eh well there might be a few vids out there. But back in high-school I was in a metal band that toured all the time. We played in other states often. That band is long broken up. But yeah I’ve rapped on stage a few times. Had a few shows, Mostly successful but there’s this one time that was just awful but that’s a different story! -chris laughs- Aye thanks for having me brother it’s been fun! Peace!
