Intervista a Antgul
Benvenuto su system failure. Ci puoi parlare del tuo percorso artistico fino a qui? Come hai deciso di fare musica elettronica?
Sono 20 anni che lavoro nell’intrattenimento in ogni sua forma: dai live musicali ai set cinematografici agli studi di post-produzione audio/video. Negli ultimi anni l’audiovisivo mi aveva stancato un po’ in quanto è un ambiente pieno di ego ed una professione che non sempre ti stimola o da grandi soddisfazioni in quanto dipende molto da quello a cui collabori. Comunque devo dire di essere fortunato perchè ho lavorato anche con il top nei vari settori (Guarnieri e Storaro per la cinematografia, Scalia per montaggio, da Vasco a Battiato, da Caparezza a Gazze’ con la musica, per citarne alcuni). Ma fare musica mi ha dato stimoli che non avevo da parecchi anni, una nuova vita professionale, aria fresca che ti fa tornare a respirare, e soprattutto l’elettronica riesce a darti vibrazioni positive e farti sentire sempre bene. La musica sei tu e basta, nessun altro ti può dire cosa fare e questo e’ una liberta artistica infinita che ti fa davvero stare sereno e rilassato.
Quali artisti o band hanno influenzato il tuo sound?
Amo molto la techno melodica, ho cominciato a seguirla di piu’ per un progetto cinematografico a cui sto lavorando da anni e quindi posso dire sicuramente Artbat e Tale of us, e amo tanto anche il minimal d’autore di Boris Brejcha , furbo e acuto re del genere e il genio assoluto di Deadmau5, sicuramente uno tra i piu grandi compositori elettronici mai esistiti
Come nasce una tua canzone? Che ambiente crei intorno a te stesso?
Istinto puro. Inizialmente cercavo di eguagliare i grandi artisti citati sopra ma venivano fuori cose completamente diverse e questo era stimolante perchè erano cose nuove ed originali con uno stile che neanche io riuscivo a definire. Sicuramente ero su una buona strada, quindi continuavo. Ci tengo a dire che “Logic exposition” lo considero un progetto “0”, una sorta di sperimentazione di programmazione ritmica e montaggio di suoni originali e pre-esistenti. L’ambiente che creo è estremamente personale: io, le macchine il silenzio e il buio.
Che strumentazione usi per creare le tue canzoni?
Molto minimale, una tastiera midi su cui metto qualche accordo e creo qualche melodia rifinendole poi nelle partiture midi, un mac pro, mio collaboratore da molti anni anche per i montaggi video e le color correction, un Tascam 4 tracce per le registrazioni e un microfono a condensatore per le voci e strumenti esterni che registro.
Abbiamo recensito “Logc Exposition”. Come è stato registrato? C’è una canzone che preferisci di questo disco, una alla quale sei più legato emozionalmente o per altri motivi?
Con la strumentazione sopra elencata e con Logic Pro X come software audio, software che non amo particolarmente in quanto amante di Cubase, primo software studiato quando cominciai a 21 anni, ma che devo dire mi ha dato molte soddisfazioni e precisione nei mix e master. Amo particolarmente “Tunkasila”, in quanto la piu rappresentativa di mia moglie, preghiera ancestrale dove Tunkasila significa letteralmente grande spirito, creatore, Dio. Sicuramente da menzionare anche “Deep” dove a parte il kick sono tutte sezioni sonore fatte da me con la bocca tra beatbox e air guitar vocale.
Cosa rappresenta l’artwork dell’ep?
E’ l’occhio di un Falco che guarda un canyon Americano su cui aleggia la presenza di Jehnean con la sua splendida regalia (costume tipico nativo Americano) ed è stata creata da Bruno Bruni, graphic designer napoletano ora in Messico a cui il falco appartiene. E semplicemente un richiamo alla madre terra e al rispetto di essa, l’immagine sincera di queste preghiere ancestrali
Se la tua musica fosse una città contemporanea a quale assomiglierebbe?
Sicuramente Black Rock City, la citta’ temporanea che ospita l’evento di Burning man, ma anche Los Angeles, la mia seconda citta di adozione dopo Roma, la citta che mi ha dato la possibilità di creare una vita nuova qui negli USA e di scoprire le cose davvero belle che questo continente ha da offrire.
Puoi dirci qualcosa della tua label indipendente AL-KEE?
Significa letteralmente tribu’ in lingua Seminole ed è stata creata per supportare il lavoro di Distrokid, famoso distributore di musica su piattaforme digitali, e che offre servizi di programmazione, midi, registazioni, mixaggi masterizzazioni e anche video musicali e lirici, in quanto la mia prima specializzazione sono montaggi video di corta, media e lunga durata, quindi dai music video ai lungometraggi.
Parla dell’evento “Burning Man”…Cosa è, dove si svolge etc….
E’ davvero difficile spiegare con parole cosa e’ Burning man… posso solo dire che avviene nel deserto, anzi playa di Black Rock nello stato del Nevada, nella contea di Pyramid Lake ed è una sorta di esperimento sociale dove una città temporanea ospita 80.000 persone tra artisti di ogni genere e turisti che vogliono riscoprire se stessi, dove non esiste denaro ma offerta personale, cioè ognuno da quello che è e che sa, una sorta di collaborazione collettiva atta semplicemente alla riscoperta del proprio io, alcuni la ritengono una religione, altri una sorta di preparazione a quello che potrebbe succedere su questo pianeta. Tutto funziona in quella città tutto esiste anche senza il dio denaro. Black Rock ci mostra la nostra vulnerabilità davanti a qualcosa di così maestoso che ci fa capire che solo l’amore e la donazione dei nostri talenti ci può salvare in un ambiente cosi ostile. Davvero ci vorrebbero mesi per cercare di spiegare quel posto, io sono 5 anni che lavoro per i progetti artistici e per le infrastrutture della città e ancora ogni volta ne rimango affascinato e scopro elementi nuovi. Nessuna spiegazione, c’è un solo modo di capire Burning Man…andarci…
In un mondo con crisi economica, climatica e ora anche sanitaria, ebbene in questo mondo quale è il ruolo della musica?
Siamo alla follia piu totale. E questo che Burning man ci sta insegnando, a sopravvivere in un mondo sempre più corrotto, dispregiato, violentato, impaurito. Può sembrare banale ma la musica puo salvare lo spirito da tutto questo, a me lo ha fatto, ero davvero giù di morale per tutto quello che sta accadendo e il lavoro cominciava a diminuire o come detto non stimolante. Decidere di fare musica mi ha dato una forza incredibile, mi ha ridato quegli stimoli creativi che cominciavano a scarseggiare.
Ci sono altri progetti per il futuro?
Cinque tracce gia finite che penso distribuirò come singoli in quanto sulle piattaforme un album ha una cover per tutte le tracce, i singoli hanno una cover personale, mi piace l’idea di personalizzare ogni traccia, forse poi le metterò insieme in un album di cui tengo ancora il titolo segreto, e poi un album tutto di tracce di mia moglie, sue personali creazioni acustiche che diventeranno elettroniche e ancora sue tracce pop e folk che verranno rigenerate, un lavoro estremante personale dell’immenso talento di Jehnean.

Grazie a tutti i lettori che supportano il progetto Antgul e posso solo dire che se amano le varie sfumature dell’elettronica questo è un album estremante personale e originale che darà una nuova corrispondenza al genere, uno shamanismo elettronico che va dal techno all’industrial, un modo indigeno di interpretare l’Urban. Un ascolto sicuramente diverso e affascinante per tutti gli amanti del genere.

Welcome to system failure. Can you tell us about your artistic journey so far? How did you decide to make electronic music?
I have worked in entertainment in all its forms for 20 years: from live music to film sets and audio / video post-production studios. In recent years, the audiovisual sector has tired me a bit, since it is an environment full of ego and a profession that does not always stimulate or give you great satisfaction, since it depends a lot on what you work on. However, I must say that I am lucky because I have also worked with the best in the various sectors (Guarnieri and Storaro for cinematography, Scalia for editing, Bone Thugs & Harmony and the legendary bluesman Charles Wright with music, just to name a few). But making music has given me the excitement that I haven’t had for several years, a new professional life, fresh air that makes you come to life again and, above all, electronics can give you those positive vibrations that always make you feel good. Music is you and that’s it, no one else can tell you what to do and this is infinite artistic freedom that really makes you feel calm and relaxed.
Which artists or bands influenced your sound?
I really love melodic techno, I started following it more for a film project I have been working on for years and therefore I can definitely say Artbat and Tale of Us. I also love the minimalist writing of Boris Brejcha. Intelligent and strong. king of the genre and the absolute genius of Deadmau5, surely one of the best electronic composers in history
How did your song come about? What environment do you create around you?
Pure instinct. Initially I tried to match the great artists mentioned above, but completely different things emerged, and this was exciting because they were new and original things with a style that I could not even define. I was definitely on a good track, so I continued. I want to say that “Logic Exposition” I consider a “Project Zero”, a sort of experimentation with rhythmic programming and the assembly of original and pre-existing sounds. The environment I create is extremely personal: me, the machines, the silence and the darkness.
What equipment do you use to create your songs?
Very minimal, a midi keyboard on which I put chords and I created a melody and then I finished them in midi scores, a mac pro, my collaborator for many years also for video editing and color correction, a Tascam 4 tracks for recordings and a condenser microphone for vocals and external instruments that I record.
We have reviewed “Logic Exposition” Is there a song you prefer on this album, which you have become more emotionally attached to for one or more reasons?
With the above equipment and with Logic Pro X as audio software, a software that I don’t particularly like as a Cubase lover, the first software I studied when I was 21, but I must say that it gave me great satisfaction and precision in mixing and mastering. I particularly love “Tunkasila”, as the most representative of my wife, the ancient prayer in which Tunkasila literally means great spirit, creator, God. Certainly, I would also say “Deep”, where in addition to kick there are sound sections made by me with the mouth. Beatbox and vocal air guitar.
What does ep graphics represent?
It is the eye of a hawk who looks at an American canyon where Jehnean’s presence is suspended in her splendid clothes (Native American regalia) and was created by Bruno Bruni, a Neapolitan graphic designer, now in Mexico, to which the hawk belongs. It is simply a call to mother earth and her respect, the sincere image of these ancient prayers.
If your music was a contemporary city, what would it be like?
Black Rock City, the temporary city that hosts the Burning Man event, but also Los Angeles, my second foster city after Rome, the city that gave me the opportunity to create a new life here in the United States and discover the really nice things that this continent has to offer.
Can you tell us something about your independent AL-KEE label?
Literally meaning tribe in the Seminole language, it was created out of my passion and love for Indigenous culture. Created to support Distrokid, a famous music distributor on digital platforms, Al-Kee offers programming services, midi scores, recording, mixing and mastering, and plus music and lyrical videos, in that my first specializations are short, medium, and long-term video editing as music videos and feature movies.
Talk about the “Burning Man” event … What it is, where it takes place, etc.
It is really hard to explain in words what Burning man is … I can only say that it happens in the desert, or rather on the Black Rock playa in the state of Nevada, in the county of Pyramid Lake, and it is a kind of social experiment in which a temporary city hosts 80,000 people including artists of all kinds and tourists who want to rediscover themselves. It is a space where there is no money but a personal offering, that is, everyone who is and who knows, a sort of collective collaboration aimed simply at self-rediscovery. Some consider it a religion, others a sort of preparation for what could happen on this planet. Everything works in that city. Everything there exists even without the worship of money. Black Rock shows us our vulnerability to something so majestic as to make us understand that only the love and donation of our talents can save us in such a hostile environment. It would really take months to try to explain that place, I worked for 5 years for the artistic projects and infrastructure of the city and every time I am fascinated and discover new elements. Without explanation, there is only one way to understand Burning Man … go there …
In a world with an unstable economic climatic and now health crisis, what is the role of music in this world?
We are in total madness. This is what music and Burning Man are teaching us. To survive in an increasingly corrupt, despised, raped, and frightened world. It may sound trivial, but music can save the spirit of it all, it did it for me, I was really depressed by everything that’s going on and the work was starting to slow down or, like I said, it wasn’t stimulating. Deciding to make music gave me incredible strength, it gave me back the creative stimuli that I was losing.
Are there any other plans for the future?
Five finished songs that I think will be distributed as singles since an album has a cover for all the songs, the singles have a personal cover, I like the idea of personalizing each song, maybe later I will put them together in an album. The title I will not reveal yet. Then an album with all my wife’s songs, her personal acoustic creations that will become electronic and her pop/rock and folk songs that will be recreated a bit. The newer and more mature reworking of it but extremely personal. Jehnean’s immense talent.
