I Gloomy June sono una band indie pop californiana composta dalla cantante Alexi Rose Belchere, dal chitarrista Devin Nelson, dal bassista Jack Sundquist e dal batterista Ash Hyatt. Chiamata così la band per la fredda nebbia che circonda la loro città natale di San Francisco all’inizio dell’estate, Gloomy June è la colonna sonora di una festa in spiaggia venata di malinconia.
In un’era in cui paura e incertezza sono le nostre più vicine compagne, Gloomy June è lì per dirti che l’incertezza può andare bene. Le canzoni di Gloomy June sono pop rifratte attraverso una lente ansiosa: a volte inni, spesso queer e sempre un po’ tragiche. Scritto fino alla fine del 2020 e all’inizio del 2021, quando la pandemia globale faceva sembrare una vita passata andare a feste e spettacoli in casa, il loro prossimo EP (titolo da definire) esplora i problemi sociali con un tono quasi nostalgico. Il nuovo singolo, “Save Anyone” è un brano inno e trascinante prodotto alla fine del 2021. Scritto durante le prime fasi della pandemia di Covid-19, la canzone racchiude il desiderio di “salvare” le persone dalla sofferenza, ma dal sentirsi impotenti.
Dice la cantante Alexi Belchere:
“Sono stata ispirata a scrivere la canzone quando il mio compagno è stato costretto ad andarsene a causa della pandemia, e quando dico che ero “ispirata” intendo il cuore spezzato e che cerco di consolarmi, sopraffatta dallo sconvolgimento che la pandemia aveva causato a tutti. Ricordo di aver visto il live streaming di Secret Sky di Porter Robinson e quando ho sentito la frase “Non sprecare la sofferenza che hai affrontato; ti servirà a tempo debito’ in “Get Your Wish”, ho scritto immediatamente il ritornello per la canzone“.
Il concetto di video musicale e gli oggetti di scena sono stati creati dal chitarrista Devin Nelson, che ha preso l’idea di “salvare” in una direzione biblica. Con uno stile di produzione artigianale e scolastico, il video ti incanterà per essere tanto accattivante.

La canzone comincia con questo refrain di chitarra insistente e basso di sottofondo. Poi si aggiungono il cantato della lead vocalist Alexi Rose Belchere e la batteria. È un pop rock tanto spigliato e frizzante. Tutto tanto attrattivo ed ammaliante, tutto tanto indie. Tante variazioni nella canzone che la rendono estremamente interessante e stimolante. L’espressività della cantante e la cura per il songwriting sono tra le qualità migliori della band insieme a questo estro pop rock/indie rock decisamente straripante: Gloomy june è come un torrente in piena, come non farsi travolgere dalla sua energia?!
Come sonorità, energia e spirito frizzante mi fanno pensare ai Sunflower bean di New York o anche i Wolf Alice di Londra. Insomma il loro pop rock è contagioso, come non gridarlo a tutti. C’è tanto appeal nella loro musica grazie ai versi ripetuti, al chorus, a questo cantato ammaliante della lead vocalist Alexi Rose Belchere.
Come non notare anche l’immaginifico video, un po’ sbarazzino, creativo, tanto cool è super adatto per essere messo in loop migliaia di volte.

The song begins with this insistent guitar refrain and background bass. Then we add the singing of the lead vocalist Alexi Rose Belchere and the drums. It’s such a breezy and bubbly pop rock. All so attractive and bewitching, all so indie. So many variations in the song that make it extremely interesting and inspiring. The expressiveness of the singer and the care for songwriting are among the best qualities of the band together with this decidedly overflowing pop rock / indie rock inspiration: Gloomy June is like a torrent in flood, how not to be overwhelmed by her energy ?!
Sonority, energy and sparkling spirit make me think of the Sunflower bean of New York or even the Wolf Alice of London. In short, their pop rock is contagious, how not to shout it at everyone! There is so much appeal in their music thanks to the repeated lines, the chorus, this bewitching cantato by lead vocalist Alexi Rose Belchere.
How not to notice also the imaginative video, a little jaunty, creative, so cool is super suitable to be looped thousands of times….
